Minutes 1-31-2011
Attendance: Brennan, Nick, Lizz
1. Anti-war-
- The guy in charge of events will get back to us as far as if we can
hold the movie without the official rights to it. (ReThink:
Afganistan.)
-“Bring war $$ home” campaign, post-Afghan war event. City war-
defunding resolution campaign in Maine is a model for what we can do
in Richmond. (more info. at
www.defundwar.org ) We could link up with
The Defenders and others to make this a state wide effort.
- At
www.costofwar.com you can find out how much countries, states,
and even counties have spent on the war.
2. Student power:
- Rams Day on the Hill report back? - Nick and Malcolm put up a banner
that said, “No hikes, no fees! Education should be free!” It stayed up
for one day, before someone took it down.
- Possibly start a branch of the International Student Movement
(
http://www.facebook.com/ism.global) for Virginia (like students in
California with the Northern California Student Movement) to discuss
mutual concerns and strategy and plan coordinated events across the
state. Emphasis on not just maintaining pre-budget cuts state of
education but on radically reforming and democratizing it (i.e.
student democratic control of universities and the eventual goal of
free and accessible public education), hence the phrase “no hikes, no
fees! Education should be free!” Groups at many colleges around VA
might be interested in being a part of it.

3. African Burial Ground & Monroe Park Campaign
- Burial Ground update
- Recalibrate tabling schedule for new semester : Nick is doing Tues
and Thurs, Brennan is doing Mon and Wed, Lizz is doing Friday. If
anyone else would like to join on any day of the week, let us know and
we’ll add you to the schedule. We’ll be tabling in the Compass from
12-2pm. If it rains or snows during those times, then tabling is off.
“Week 1” is Burial Ground (MWF)/Monroe Park (TR) and “Week 2” the
reverse, etc. We’ll also be tabling for anti-war, student power and
IWW bag lunch issues as well.
4. Help with RIWW bag lunch program. We’re helping the Richmond
Industrial Workers of the World with their Wobbly Bag Lunch Program.
We’d like to create a program at VCU similar to the U of R program in
which we utilize students’ extra swipes by having them fill out a form
to donate a swipe which is used to provide food for the temp workers.
More information and discussion about the matter will be online.
5. Nick will be the facilitator for next week, and Lizz will take
notes.
6. We’re going to change meeting times to every other week, and if/
when we think it’s necessary we can call emergency meetings on the off
weeks. Please speak up if you have questions, comments, or concerns.
