The HepB screening initiative is long overdue for the large Vietnamese communities of New Orleans because 1 in every 10 Asian Americans are living with chronic Hepatitis B (compared to 1 in 250 folks in the general public) and most don't even know what it is, let alone if they are infected. Of those who have Hepatitis B, 1 in 4 will die of liver cancer, cirrhosis or liver failure. Unlike Hepatitis A and C, most Asians acquire HepB at birth from their mothers.
For everyone who came out to the Lunar New Year HepB screening event in January, we cannot thank you enough! With your enthusiasm and relentless efforts, we were able to screen over 400 people in just two days. Of those within the target population, 39 were found to be positive for Hepatitis B (~12%). All were contacted about their status and every single person of the 39 have returned for follow ups!
This coming weekend, we are planning a similar large-scale screening event that will take place at two community churches on the Westbank. Our goal is to screen 600 people next weekend and we can’t do this without your help. Non-Tulane folks are more than welcome to volunteer as well! No medical experience is necessary!
