COMMUNITY ORGANIZING RESIDENCY (COR) ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2012-2013

 

Community organizing has the power to transform people, organizations, neighborhoods and our nation. The Community Organizing Residency (COR), a six-month paid residency, recruits and trains organizers from different faith backgrounds through partnerships with labor, congregation-based and community organizing groups in New York City, Chicago, the Twin Cities, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area.  Seeking to develop organizers and strengthen organizing groups, Islamic, Christian, and Jewish organizations created the Community Organizing Residency.


There are two paths into COR. Path A is for individuals seeking a full-time paid placement in a top-tier community organizing group. Applicants accepted through Path A will receive a $17,000 stipend and health care coverage. Path B is for individuals currently working in congregations, unions, or community groups who are seeking leadership training, mentorship, an opportunity to explore different faith traditions and a cohort of peers. Applicants accepted through Path B will need to pay a program fee. Details can be found at www.RootedinFaith.org.


Residencies begin on October 10, 2012 with a 4-day opening retreat and end on April 18, 2013 with a 3-day closing retreat.

About Excel Bridgeport

 

Excel Bridgeport is a growing advocacy organization that works to engage, empower and mobilize community members and city leaders to help close the achievement gap between Bridgeport and its surrounding communities. As an emerging community based organization, Excel Bridgeport exists solely to bring about the district-wide school change necessary to dramatically alter the life trajectory of Bridgeport's students. We believe that students, who directly experience the achievement gap daily, are an integral part of this movement for change. Youth, armed with knowledge of current and important issues, will be able to use the advocacy skills they have developed during the Excel Bridgeport Youth Advocacy and Leadership Program to actually influence change that matters to them at the local and state level.

OPERATIONS AND PROJECTS MANAGER

 

Position Summary

We are seeking an energetic and entrepreneurial person to serve as the Operations and Projects Manager (OPM). This person will play a critical role in the growth of our organization and the advancement of Excel Bridgeport's mission. The OPM will perform a wide ranging set of administrative tasks, manage special projects and interns, provide mission-critical programmatic support, and also run the day to day operations of our growing office. The work environment is fast-paced and demanding. This person must be able to quickly adapt to changing situations, be a quick learner, and have impeccable work ethic. Because this person will be managing multiple projects, systems and interns, this individual must also be extremely organized and pay close attention to detail.

 

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Projects

- In partnership with Excel Bridgeport's Executive Director and Youth Program Manager, help develop and implement our Youth Advocacy and Leadership Program

- Support staff in project planning and monitoring, particularly for our parent problem solving group and community organizing campaign

- Execute dynamic communications strategy to keep stakeholders informed about the status of education in Bridgeport and Excel Bridgeport's progress

- Manage external relationships and develop new partnerships with key organizations and stakeholders

- Assist in grant writing and fund development strategy

Operations

- Assume a proactive role in increasing the efficiency and organization of Excel Bridgeport

- Act as a liaison to building management and local vendors

- Manage and track finances and assist in monitoring budgets

- Manage fundraising calendars and track received gifts

- Assist in the effective implementation of Excel's strategic plan

- Provide administrative support for the Executive Director

 

Compensation:

YOUTH PROGRAM MANAGER

 

Position Summary

We are looking for an energetic and entrepreneurial person to join our growing team. The Youth Program Manager will work to build a program that will advance youth leadership and advocacy for educational change. This new staff member will become an important part of decision-making and planning for our Youth Advocacy and Leadership Program, as well as a leader in our organization and community.

 

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

- Support youth to effectively advocate for education reform at the local and state level

- In partnership with Excel Bridgeport staff and partner organizations, design and implement the youth advocacy program (including recruiting, training, and retaining youth) to engage students in learning the advanced skills necessary to become effective advocates

- Build the knowledge of students on education reform issues and policies and design and manage pathways for informed action

- Help youth identify issues to address in education and create individualized goal-focused plans

- Integrate youth organizing with long-term, community-driven policy change efforts in Bridgeport and across the state

- Evaluate program using measurable outcomes, tracking youth development in terms of personal growth and levels of effective civic engagement

- Coordinate youth meetings, events, and forums

HISPANICS IN PHILANTHROPY SUMMER 2012 FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY

 

HIP is seeking dynamic activists who demonstrate a passion for Latino issues and show a high degree of independence, creativity, and initiative. Application deadline is May 7th, 2012.

 

About HIP

Hispanics in Philanthropy's (HIP) mission is to build the capacity of Latino nonprofits, while strengthening the participation and leadership of Latino professionals in philanthropy. HIP supports Latino communities and leaders through its programs, including the Funders' Collaborative for Strong Latino Communities (FC), the transnational grantmaking program, and a series of issue-based Focused Initiatives. The award-winning FC and transnational programs bring together more than 165 funders to support over 500 Latino nonprofits across the U.S. and Latin America. HIP's Focused Initiatives are pioneering grantmaking initiatives that focus philanthropic attention on issues of critical importance to Latino communities; current initiatives include Aging in the Latino Population and Movement Building at the Intersection of LGBT Rights and Racial Justice. As a grantmaking and grantseeking organization, HIP provides unique hands-on training and exposure for students and young professionals interested in the philanthropic sector.

 

Position Description

HIP Fellowships are carefully tailored to match each fellow's interests with a broad range of organizational areas. Potential focus may include programmatic work supporting our:

- Transnational program

- Aging in the Latino Population Initiative

- Latino LGBT Initiative

- Men and Boys program

Fellows may also focus on Communications and Development. HIP Fellows are given a high degree of flexibility in defining their range of work and are expected to take charge of projects in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment. HIP seeks fellows at the graduate level, but will consider students in their last years of undergraduate work and in other stages of professional development.

 

Time Commitment

Fellowships have a preferred timeframe of approximately 3 months. We ask for a minimum commitment of 16 hours a week, but allow for flexible work hours to match Fellow's and staff needs.

 

Compensation/Credit

All fellowships are unpaid, educational opportunities, with potential for academic credit.
