Carissimi,
after the exercise session today, I was ALMOST tempted to write a handout for you, summarising
the basic properties of characters/character tables, and the most important elementary
recipes to construct them.
However, looking at the Section 24 of the book by Gordon James and Martin Liebeck,
I discovered that THIS is essentially ALL you need to start, maybe with some short comments.
Maybe some of the most sophisticated examples we encounter require 1--2 additional ideas,
but mostly it's all already there.
If you wish, tomorrow I could ask to print copies for everyone, which you could then use at
the exam (I think, if I give you more difficult problems than previous years, and it cannot be
otherwise; whereas you have 4 weeks instead of 5 and no midterm, I should make your life
easier in some other respects).
Enjoy!!!
