As you're probably doing this on a mobile device, your best bet would be to request the desktop version of the web page you're on when accessing the mentioned shared link(s) so as to preview the files within the browser itself.

open file in browser instead of download c

I want to open a blank word document in the word app so I can start writing up my uni assignment, but it always opens the browser version of word. I can download, and I own, the OneNote app, but I can't find a way to download the word app or open my documents in the app version of word rather than the browser version. If anyone has a way to do either of these, help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

add target="_blank" to get a new window. adding .pdf may help. If you have control over the host web server adjusting the headers for the files in question will also help it open inline. I can tell you what headers to set if you are able too

The server tells the browser whether the content you are getting is "inline" or not. If you are controlling the server, you will want to change the server's settings for whether to serve the problematic file as an attachment. Otherwise, there are browser plug-ins which allow you to override this. For Firefox, there is Open in Browser;

You can make the link open in a new window by adding target="_blank". The question if the PDF file is opened in the window or downloaded depends on the software the user has installed, i don't think it is possible to control that.

I've encountered an annoying issue where any links in Microsoft Office 2010 applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) installed on Windows 10 always open links in Microsoft Edge. This is despite having set Firefox or Chrome (I tested both) as the default browser.

Addendum 2023:
There is new option in OUTLOOK to configure how links are opened by Outlook.
You'll find the setting in Outlook Options > Advanced > Link Handling > Open hyperlinks from Outlook in: .
You then have he choice between "Edge" and "Standard Browser". Guess what Microsoft chose as the default value ;-).

If you try curl [youraddress]/index.html -vvv what response headers are showing for you? I am interested if Content-Type was set incorrectly, which is one reason the browser will not recognise it as HTML and download the file instead.

It seems like linksharing might not be detecting the right content type. It tries to auto-detect based on the extension. If Content-Type is set in metadata (or content-type in lowercase put by S3 clients), it will use that instead of guessing.

Summary
Links to specific messages or channels in Mattermost open in the browser instead of the app
Steps to reproduce
copy link; paste into wherever, click the link

The ability to specify a landing option has been added recently and you maybe clicked on the browser variante and on save, which causes the browser to save your preference and not redirect you to the deskto app.
When you look at the local storage of your Mattermost instance, you will see two keys responsible for that, namely:

Small step forward, it did bring me to the landing page so I can save my choice and I can verify that the keys are indeed there now. However the links are still opening in the browser, for my own server as well as for

Same here. only the key landingPageScreen was present at first, i deleted it and then got the prompt whether i prefer browser or desktop app again. i saved and this time both keys were set. however, this only works exactly once (immediately after saving the preference). all links opened afterwards are again opening in browser without redirect. [we are also self hosted]

When open ROOT by typing root in the Command prompt or terminal, a new tab as a TBrowser in my web browser instead of the ROOT file explorer. Anyone knows how to fix it. I wanted it to open the file explorer. So that i can edit the root files in a new window instead of the browser tab.

I hosted my VB application in Win Server 2016, with Citrix image in it. The application has a provision to open up pdf files within the application grid itself were browser control is embedded, and while clicking on the pdf file, it is supposed to open up within the embedded grid itself, but now after migrating to Win server 2016 and while trying to open the pdf, it is showing as a pop-up with options either to Save or View from it, which ultimately opens pdf in the default pdf viewer.

My issue here is, in my VB application, I have an embedded web browser control, where the PDF should load up, upon choosing from the list of PDF's provided, instead it is showing up as a download window, stating either to Open or Save the file. I strongly believe it has something to do with some citrix setting, but could figure it out.

Description
Our app is just published in the Marketplace and all works well - except we expected the app to open inside of the Zoom interface but we see the user is being directed to the right URL which opens in the browser.

On both jpg images or PDF files, when the user clicks on the link it downloads yhe file instead of opening in the browser.

How to get the File/Image open in browser instead of downloading?

Thank in advance

My default browser is Firefox. However, if Google Chrome is open and I click any link outside that browser (in a PDF or Telegram, for example), the default behavior is to open Firefox to access the link I've just clicked.

Most likely this is not an solutions for your problem, but in my case I had to configure Firefox to be the default browser. Since on my Ubuntu Chrome was the default, any links opened in it, though Firefox was opened as well. Once I have changed the default to Firefox, it worked out.

Hi guys, I have installed the Spotify app on my Mac Pro... but when someone sends me a link to a playlist via Slack the playlist always opens in browser rather than the App, even if the App is launched.

It would be better to store the Excel file in SharePoint or OneDrive and instead link to that file in Asana. Therefore, clicking on the attachment will open Excel 365 in your browser where you can make edits directly (along with other members, at the same time) which will be saved instantly & automatically.

If you go into system settings, I think there should be a "Default Applications" item - it might be under "About" in some versions, but I can't remember the exact ones as I'm not running Ubuntu atm. If you go in there, is Signal set as your browser/web application? Could you change it to your browser instead?

The opener library is then documented to use an library version of xdg-open embedded into the binary. If you copy a URL like file:///home/daboross/.rustup/toolchains/nightly-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/share/doc/rust/html/index.html and run

i tried with other apps like Uber and theirs seem to work fine from youtube. Opening a video on youtube with an UberEats link will open a brave tab and prompt to switch app

To start the editor directly, in the project browser select the below checkbox in unreal project browser:

and start the project, next time you start from visual studio (or any other IDE) it will directly open the editor.

I'm trying to figure how to get a PDF to open in a browser instead of downloading. We use them as readings for our course, and people will already have a CD with the files on them, so I just want the link to open the file in the browser rather than clutter their computer with extra copies.

We are happy to help with the issue you are having with not being able to open YouTube links in messages in the YouTube app. Do you know if the link being sent to you is coming from a link that was opened originally in a browser, or the app? What about in the past? Were you able to open any YouTube link in the YouTube app?

I have included a screenshot of the location in the app where I am trying to get this functionality to work. Though I am targeting a custom module, behavior should be the same for any module if I have my browser settings set to open in a browser tab.

You would need to develop your own file handler. Otherwise, it will be handled by SharePoint or if you integrate something like Adobe Document Cloud, opened by Doc Cloud (which is still in the browser, but Adobe's service instead).

In essence, no PDF application out there (such as Adobe Reader) implements a Chrome plugin to automatically open in the desktop application. Chromium-based browsers will always have the PDF open in the browsers' renderer. Adobe provides a plugin for Chromium browsers that allows you to then click and open it in the desktop, but that's not quite applicable in this case.

This is not useful because we need the ability to click on a SharePoint link and have it open directly in Adobe Pro. The browser PDF viewers is almost completely useless for business and professional needs. Currently I have about 500 copies of the same file downloaded, because this seems to be the fastest way to open them in a useful application, while maintain live revision control.

As such, it is up to the website to decide how to display it. If the link was to an actual PDF file then you could change the browser's settings to download it instead of open it internally, but this is not the case here.

I have created a local path that is synced to Box which does open the file directly. The issue with this method is that it will only work on my local computer, I cannot share that path to anyone else.

There are some cases in which you might have content that links to an external website. The problem is that projects wrapped in Cordova by default open all links in the wrapper browser, instead of opening them in the system browser.
