Remember to do your backups frequently so even your USB burned or something you will be able to restore all your data to another location. I would recommend to do at least weekly backups to some cloud service like Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. Manager backups are not so big unless you have a massive amount of data, so a free account in any of these services should be enough to do regular backups.
To ensure safety of data - always backup your data daily!
Never keep important data such as your accounting database on a USB drive. They can go at any time without any warning! They are very unsafe as a storage medium. Use USB drives to transfer data or to store data that you have stored on your computer at home.
@dori, consider everything @dalacor said concerning the reliability of USB flash drives. That said, however, there really should not be any reason you cannot run Manager from one. Once you open the application, it will be on your computer in RAM. The application itself is fairly small by modern standards.
The issue will be poor performance, because data transfer speeds to/from the USB drive will be quite slow compared to the local bus. No data is stored in the application. All data is in the application data folder that @sulfuror mentioned. Constant access is required for good performance. Performance will be governed by where your data file is, not where the application is.
There is never a worry about losing Manager. You can always download a new copy from the web site. The issue is safety of your data, which is why backup files should never be on your computer and should be made frequently. Never allow more time between backups than you are willing to re-enter all the data.
Keep Manager Data ON YOUR COMPUTER. Get a local IT technician to come round to your place and setup an online backup system for you to backup all your important data (not just Manager, but all your documents, photos etc).
No. 3 is a backup of your entire drive. @dalacor is right that you are using it incorrectly if its repeatedly copying your entire disk. The point is to update your stored information using appropriate backup software, not just clone the drive over and over.
What is going on?? where is all my data?? I have just inspected the instructions for importing a business and it talks only about making manual backups which I have never done because nobody ever told me to.
your business file is always stored in the path shown as Application data folder under your preferences. this can be left as default or manually changed to another location in your drive.
so the first thing to do would be to find your files in that location.
and you should note that Manager stores you business files in a separate folder not related to Manager installation folder. so even if you uninstall Manager your business files would still be in the location you had set or the default location unless you manually delete them.
things happen regardless of our best efforts. its better to trust ourselves than trust a machine.
make sure you take backups on a regular interval to a different drive rather than to the same drive to avoid problems in case of a drive failure.
As long as you can still access the drive you were using previously and did not proactively delete your data file, you did not lose any data. You have been focused on finding the program itself. What you are looking for is the application data file. Read the Guide you were given by @sharpdrivetek : Manager Guides.
Since you did not make any backups, there will not be any. So you cannot follow the instructions to import a backup. You must recover your original data and add it. If transactions are missing from the data file you are looking at, you have the wrong file. You are probably looking at a relic file left behind by a software update.
The Virtual Drive must be installed alongside the Backup Manager. It will create a drive letter on the Windows Explorer where you can browse through your backup sessions locally. Files can be dragged and dropped out of the Virtual Drive to restore backup data to the local filesystem.
We have a Windows 2012 R2 serve with a HP StoreEver MSL2024 autoloader attached. It was all working ok until it randomly started going offline in Backup Exec 2014. In device manager the Tape drive was showing up as HP Ultrium 5-SCSI SCSI sequential device and the medium change was showing up as "Unknown medium changer".
I thought that changing to the HP Ultrium 5 drivers from HP for the autoloader might fix this issue (I should have read more before I did this as I know this is wrong now) but now the tape drive is showing up as Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-5 drive and no medium changer shows up at all.
How can I first get the right drivers back on to the tape drive (the generic Microsoft ones) and then secondly how can I get the medium changer showing up again? Then how can I get BE detecting the autoloader properly?
Is there any way of doing the above steps without shutting down? The BE server is in a datacentre and if I shut down the tape library I won't be able to start it again without physically going to the datacentre. If there's no other way I can travel there, but just checking first.
Should the medium changer appear in device manager even if it doesn't have the right drivers? I have read one forum post where the changer was hidden from the OS because it was changed to sequential instead of random mode. I've checked this as well, the library is in random mode.
So there might be something wrong with the medium changer? I can't see any errors in the HP Command View console for the tape library. I've tried rebooting the tape library as well, it came back fine but still doesn't show in device manager anymore.
I'd also recommend downloading HP Library and Tape Tools and running it against the library to rule out hardware issues. Just stop the BE services before doing so. Also make sure the cable used isn't perhaps damaged!
WIth the tape drive I've gone ahead and installed the HP OEM drivers (mistake) and even when I uninstall the tape drive from device manager, reboot the server, it reappears again with the same drives after I log in.
pkh - I can do reboots of the server and of tape drive, just can't do a full power off as I don't beleive there's any iLO type function on the tape drive to turn it back on again unless I go to the data centre.
I noticed that tape loader number 1 (listed as LUN) inside HP command view was saying "Not Ready, Not connected" so I restarted the tape drive again and checked the status of tape loader 1 again and it said "Connected and online". I then restarted the server after that. When the server came back online, I checked device manager and Medium Changer devices was listed. There was also now two HP LTO Ultrium-5 drives listed under "Tape Drives". This seems fine because we have two tape drives.
It was listed as "Hewlett Packard MSL G3 Series library (x64 based)". I changed it to "Unknown Medium changer" as advised and rebooted the server again. When it came back online it had changed back to the "Hewlett Packard MSL G3 Series library (x64 based)" listing.
I thought I'd give BE a try anyway, and BE discovered the robotic library, and the tape drives attached. I ran an initialize and it worked. I am now running a test job and it's 150gb into the job with no errors.
You probably need to actually remove the HP drivers (medium changer and tape drive) from the system, not just disable/uninstall the device from device manager. Once HP drifvers are on the hard disk, Windows and/or HP will keep trying to "help you" with help that you do not want.
I have a external drive that has lots of production related files in it. I try to setup a automatic backup system by going into dropbox-click on my profile-click prefences- backup-manage backup- then i try to add my external drive but after selecting it it says "There was an issue backup up 'LIGHTING' Your files are safe in your external drive. Go to help center to learn more". I dont understand why this error is happening and how to fix it. Lmk what i can do and phrase it simple so i can understand.
