Everyone,

I've been a pretty bad instructor this semester to you all.

Although I've tried to make up for the missing classes with the
videos, emails, phone calls, etc, it is understandable that many of
you have found that quite lacking. In particular, I think it's natural
for you feel comfortable using the more personalized resources I tried
to make available. (Remember, my cell phone number is 801-361-0732.)

Because talk is cheap, I won't dwell on apologizing and genuflecting,
instead I will focus on what to do going forward. I am basically done
with what has been keeping me away and I've started canceling some of
the other interviews I had scheduled. (For instance, I was going to be
away on 3/2 but I will not anymore.)

For the absences on 3/4, 3/5, 3/6, and 3/9, I'm trying to cancel and
re-arrange things so that I can make the 3/6 and 3/9 classes. In
either case, I will actually be around on campus because I'm not
really traveling any more: 2/28 (today), 3/2, 3/3, 3/7 (saturday), and
3/11, 3/12, 3/13.

How amenable are you to having in-person makeup classes? Vassar's wise
policy on this is that I should try but I can't require you to go. I
could try to arrange times to run a class. Alternatively, I could just
have extensive office hours and people could come in as they please to
get help and still use the videos I recorded.

Here are what I currently plan as office hours before Spring Break:

I will update it if I can cancel the 3/6, 3/9, and 3/10 things.

Can you do two things:

1) If you want to do a makeup class, could you paint over times that
you can and then enter your name as "Name (class)"

2) If you want to schedule an office visit, could you paint over the
times that you want to come and then enter your name as "Name (visit)"

This will help gauge the amount of interest in a special class vs visits.

Finally, I suspect that some of you are anxious about your grades.
Recall that the first assignment is essentially extra-credit, so if
you did poorly on data1, do not worry. game1 is about half
extra-credit, so there is still not a lot to worry about there if you
are struggling, but you still have two weeks.

See you all soon,

<3
