The current issue of BTG has a 7 page article written by myself about
how conceptions of wealth and poverty are cultural. The UN has created
what they call the Millennium Development Goals, which include
eliminating poverty worldwide, defined as having income more than $2 a
day per person, with a target date of 2015. In the article I argue
that this same goal can be easier accomplished by adjusting the
cultural bias about what is poverty. Ironically, I state, our goal at
Gitagrad is to be able to live with income LESS than $2 a day. And,
that we feel that we can be very happy, and satisfied, when achieving
this, because such independence will allow us to have extensive time
for Krishna Consciousness.

The article includes 8 or 10 photos from our Gitagrad project.

It can be downloaded from here as a PDF:

I tried downloading it but the site says "processing download request" but
doesn't actually download it. Am I doing something wrong?

I am not sure. Typically my connection is so slow that I always have
trouble uploading and downloading anything but email and a webpage. It
should work. Just give it time. Let me know if it eventually succeeds
(or you give up) and what the necessary conditions were.

I won't even try with my dinosaur of a computer...I will be here till
next century- but great idea for an article! As SP pointed out... once
shelter, and food (and arguably education) is provided, who needs
money? It will not bring happiness, will not even bring security, as
its value can plunge overnight. All our concepts of what security
means are being crushed in the global financial crisis- we used to
think it was in stocks, till the market took a tailspin. We used to
think it was in owning your own house, but now so many once-home-
owners are homeless. We used to think it was a good career, but so
many qualified professionals are now homeless and begging for welfare.
What is security then? It is a place in a godly monarchy, because the
monarch, who need not wear a crown and gown, may even be dressed in
jeans!!!, provides shelter and food for everyone, by taxing people who
produce it, then redistributing it. As he considers all his subjects
with the same love and concern as his own family members, no needy
person who approaches him is ever turned away. That is his dharma, his
duty without which there is no meaning to life- it is his essence and
purpose for being- SP once described dharma as like the wetness in
water- there is no meaning to water without wetness, so there is no
meaning to life without dharma. As wetness cannot be taken away from
water so the dharma to offer protection and security cannot be taken
away from the ksatriya- it is who he is. Protection from such a
ksatriya assures security of the body. Security of the spirit is
assured by constant and regular spiritual counselling by self-realized
souls, not gurus who fly in for a day, and then on their way somewhere
else, and no time to answer bothersome emails from disciples who are
having problems. That is the security of the spirit- freedom from
doubt and illusion, provided by the brahmana class, who may not wear a
thread, may look like everyone else!

Yesterday I received 10 complementary copies of BTG with my article
"Becoming Wealthy on $2 a Day". I noticed that there were only 2
downloads from my fileshare site, so I have uploaded it here to the
files section. It is a 1.3mb pdf file. Check it out to see some
pictures of the devotees and scenes from our Gitagrad village in
Ukraine.

Go to the files section on the home page. It is titled "44-6
($2Dollars).pdf" (I guess that means Vol. 44 no. 6 for BTG)
