Learning and memory are one of the major functions of the central nervous system that are needed in everyday life. One of
the factors that can improve short-term memory performance is by listening to music, one of which is classical music.
Listening to classical music is thought to be able to form sufficient attention so that the incoming information is recorded
properly and forms a memory. This study was aimed to determine the effect of exposure to classical music on short-term
memory in medical students at the HKBP Nommensen University. The design of this research was true experiment research
in the form of pretest-posttest with control group. The sample was divided into 2 groups, each 18 students from the medical
faculty who were completing their final project. Each group was given a short-term memory test using a memory test using
numbers. After that, the classical music of Beethoven's Pathetique II was played for the treatment group for 30 minutes,
while the control group was given a break. After 30 minutes, the test was take again and seen the score. In the group was
exposed to classical music, there were 4 students whose short-term memory scores were lower, 3 students whose shortterm
memory scores were the same and there were 11 students whose short-term memory scores were higher after
exposure to classical music. Based on the Wilcoxon test, there is a significant difference in short-term memory scores
between before and after exposure to classical music. Exposure to classical music has an influence on the short-term
memory of medical students at the HKBP Nommensen University.
Thematic Field Practice is one of educational activities that must be taken by every college student. Thematic Field Practices are aimed to guide students to become professional educators, responsible, disciplined, and know the proper procedures. The purpose of this Thematic Field Practice is to increase student experience, insight, and skills in the field of music and share insights learned while studying at HKBP Nommensen University Medan to the HKBP BETESDA song leader. During the Thematic Field Practice (PLT) there are several of the song leader members who had difficulty singing and reading the notation in the Buku Ende. So students do an easier training method, namely by singing the correct notation at a slow tempo, after the song leader members understand how to read the correct notation. According to the author's observation, the results for the song leader participants are to increase their knowledge in singing, gain insight into reading rhythm and notation in the Buku Ende and increase the confidence of the song leader members when singing.
