Im a fanatic koreanovela fan, i dont buy whose the main lead of the film but i am for the story line. I just watched it 2 days ago, like you it cant leave my thoughts.
Salute to Gong Yu coz ive read that hes the one who initiated the novel to become a film.
Best acting for the 3 kids. I just wondered why it only got a few acting awards.

Silenced is based on the controversial novel The Crucible and tells the chilling story of the Gwangju Inhwa School. This institution became a breeding ground for unthinkable atrocities, as teachers and staff subjected students with hearing impairments to physical and sexual abuse over a five-year period.

The protagonist, played by Gong Yoo, portrays a new teacher at the school who becomes increasingly disturbed by the appalling treatment the students endure. Determined to fight for justice, he teams up with a human rights activist to expose the truth and hold the perpetrators accountable.

However, this was not the end of the story. Thanks to the relentless efforts of concerned citizens, petitions were launched demanding a reevaluation of the case. The groundswell of support led to the reopening of the investigation and a reformation of existing legislation.

So, grab your tissues, prepare your heart for an emotional rollercoaster, and experience the painful yet transformative journey of Silenced. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that every voice is heard, no matter how long it may have been silenced.

While I am not sure I can watch this movie (always difficult to watch movies/shows related to abuse), it is also really important to have media that highlight these so we can work towards resolving issues and preventing them in the future..

I believe that the new law that was passed that removed the statute of limitations on crime cases due to public demand is great. This is a fair decision since the impact of a crime can last a lifetime, and time restrictions should not be added to a crime in my book. A crime is a crime

Movies are a great way to introduce about the wrongs in the society and also raises awareness on such delicate incidents, The subject of the movie is very heart wrenching but at the same time an eye opener too.

Voices of the Silenced immerses the viewers in the historical narrative of Park Soo-nam, a Korean born in colonial-era Japan. Through the meticulous curation of two 16mm documentary films dating back to 1985, alongside the restoration of previously unreleased footage, the film resurrects the testimonies of witnesses, providing a poignant exploration of the Zainichi Korean experience.

As the film traverses from the past to the present, it prompts audiences to reflect on the profound impact of colonization and war, compelling us to confront the losses endured by communities of the Zainichi Koreans. In doing so, it serves as a vital record of their ongoing struggle for justice and recognition.

Voices of the Silenced not only challenges us to contemplate the essence of documentary filmmaking but also sparks crucial inquiries about the importance of reclaiming lost histories in the face of historical injustices. This collaborative endeavor, helmed by director Park Soo-nam and her daughter and co-director Park Maeui, stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of those whose voices have been marginalized and silenced.

The movie begins on a saddening note which sets the mood for the later incidents. Gang In Ho receives a job as an art teacher at a school for the deaf. Despite his multiple attempts to engage with them, the students remain aloof to his approaches. This concern of his is dismissed by other teachers who also casually ignore when one student being beaten up in front of them and the screams of female students at night. When the perpetrators are put on trial, they are eventually let go, because of corruption, influential connections and negligence of law. The story shows a battle against the unjust judicial system where the weak are eventually silenced when put up against the influential.

When a person belongs to multiple disadvantaged categories, the discrimination faced by them is much worse. In Silenced, students are oppressed due to their age, disability and later due to their economic background. They do not understand the nature of the crime except the fact that they are at unease. A child with disability requires more aid as compared to a disabled adult or an abled child. Not only are they unable to come to terms with their distress but are also not able to express it.

The director of Silenced does not shy away from showing explicit scenes which often leaves the viewers with an uncomfortable feeling. Silenced was criticised on this ground by some viewers. It could however be the intention of the director of Silenced for the audience to see and feel an ounce of discomfort which survivors of sexual assault go through during the formidable act and the judicial procedure. He did not wish to end Silenced on a positive note, instead he wanted his audience to realise that such situations in reality did not have a happy ending.

Silenced sparked an outrage in country against the unfair decision in the trial. This lead to reopening of the case. The school was finally closed in 2011. The laws regarding limitation period were amended. As per the real incident as depicted in Silenced, most of the perpetrators were exempted due to expiration of statute of limitation. The amended laws removed the limitation period in cases involving sexual assault were the victim is either below the age of thirteen or a disabled woman. The maximum punishment of the crime was also extended to life imprisonment. Suffice to say, Silenced had a lasting impact on the audience.
