Hooray!!!!! Another fiber enthusiast!!!!! :D
We've never had a wheel at vhs unfortunately. At one point I was considering making one of these but got busy . I still think this would be the best solution for the space (compact, and super diy):

I can bring my drop spindle to shhh if you want to learn to spin and if I have a chance I'll try to grab my wheel. Really though, I recommend learning on a spindle.
Seriously, spinning is way more fun than knitting or crochet!
The basic difference between a spindle and a wheel is that the spindle is compact and the wheel has a bigger drive. The wheel works in the same way but with a different mechanism (is with the spindle you have to wrap it around and with the wheel there's a flyer and bobbin that it gets spun onto directly).
The wheel is powered by treadles (foot pedals) and takes some time because you really have to keep up with it (its fast). Its good if you want to get some serious work done quickly but I use the spindle way more because I can bring it with me and its good for public transit and idle time.
The electric one is super cool though. I'd love to see us have a fleet of those. Maker faire project anyone? *wink!*
Lol OK cool I'll explain in person on Saturday and show you what i mean. Its super simple, sorry if there was a lot of crafty jargon there. Nice work on the toque!!!!!!!! :D

-KesslerAm I crazy or was there a spinning wheel at the hackspace? If there is, is there anyone who knows how to use one and would be willing to show me?
I recently did some crocheting and made my first hat (for my unborn nephew). To ensure I'm ready for traveling back in time, I realized that I need to learn how to spin from fiber (and then later how to shear a sheep).
