Hello Everyone

We have 3 Ham Radio nights planned for the next few weeks at VHS
  • Thursday March 14th, 2013 @ 7:30 pm - Karl Brown
  • Monday March 25th, 2013 @ 7:30 pm
  • Thursday April 4th, 2013 @ 7:30 pm - Karl Brown
These nights will be forced around getting you people ready to take the HAM radio licensing test. Vector is running a basic class on HAM radios starting March 16th and is running over the next 4 consecutive Saturdays. The source costs $95 and includes the HAM radio licensing test. If you want to get your licence I would suggest taking this course.

The next VECTOR Basic Class starts March 16, 2013 and will run for 4 consecutive Saturdays. Classes are held in the E-Comm Media Room from 08:00 to 12:00. The course fee of $95 include an Industry Canada examination and course materials. For further information or to register, please contact the VECTOR Training Coordinator.

Hi HAMs-to-be,

The software Steven linked to is quite good, but it only tells you if
you're right or wrong. RIC-7 is the question bank that you'll be
examined from; the annotated RIC-7
(http://www.nsarc.ca/training/basic/basicqb.pdf) includes every
question you can be asked on the amateur basic exam, and it also
includes a small description of WHY a given answer is the correct one,
which is extremely valuable.

Also note that (eg. if Vector is too expensive or you can't schedule
it in) Industry Canada will let you write the test for $20. That
doesn't come with the training course and so on. See:
http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/smt-gst.nsf/eng/sf01777.html#indus32

Best of luck! Don't transmit directionally in the microwave band if
there's meat in the path!

Is there a registration or can people just show up for these? Also, are the three sessions repeats of the same thing, or on different topics?

Cheers,
AC.

I don't know how Karl wishes to handle his talks, but I (William) am
thinking of tailoring my talk to a non-specialist, yet technical
audience. It will be fairly informal. So it will depend on the needs
of the audience what topics I will cover. If it's the same group as
went to Karl's first talk, I can choose different topics.
Registration not required -- just show up -- but if you let me know
you will be there, I can plan more cunningly.

Tonight is the first Hams @ Hackspace Tutoring Night.

This is for anyone who is studying for the Basic Qualification.
Tonight, I plan to go over the things you need to know for the Electronics portion of the exam.
If you take a look at:
 https://www.rac.ca/en/amateur-radio/beginner-info/exhaminer/
and download:Basic Qualification - English(2010 01),
you can see the exam questions.
I am planning to do a Basic Electronics lecture, tailored to the questions in the exam.

My next tutoring evening, scheduled for Thursday April 4th, 2013 @ 7:30 pm, will have to be moved to a different date.
I'm open to tutoring on the following two dates:
Saturday April 6th, 2013 @ 12:30 pm
Monday April 8th, 2013 @ 7:30 pm
Get your vote in early.

Will there be anyone to open the 'Space tonight ?
Thanks,
-Karl
