I am on the wind mobile network. What phone would you recommend for a
heavy texting, email user?

Guess it depends on your preferences.

Personally I prefer a physical keyboard and is why I have an older phone, the
HTC Vision (aka TMobile G2, Bell/Telus Desire Z) which has an excellent
physical keyboard.

My wife has a Desire Z because she insists on a physical keyboard but is looking to upgrade.   Is is starting to show its age a bit woth some newer games and such.   She games on her phone HEAVILY.  For example it will only run Ingress at around 9fps while my S2 runs it at 30 on average.  But other than that she loves it for day-to-day text, email, etc.

I'm also on WIND and I love my Galaxy Nexus - it's amazing.  I switched away from a hardware keyboard and i don't mind typing on it, but I use Swype so it's pretty quick.

Yup Swype helps a lot for onscreen typing but I still prefer physical. I use
swype for short emails or texts ,but more than a few sentences I always drop
back to physical.

If someone came out with a phone with S3/S4 specs and a physical keyboard,
i'd be in heaven.

If you're okay with a touch screen, the Google nexus 4 is a great phone. The swipe texting works very well,  and the price is a pretty great deal for an unlocked phone. I've really enjoyed mine so far.

I've also really enjoyed my nexus 4, had it about 2 weeks now...

If someone made this bluetooth slide-out keyboard for an S2 I'd be all over it.   I have a tantillus in the works so that may be an early project for me once it it up and running.  Not ideal, obviously, but it sure would be handy

I was a hard-core crackberry user until I switched to the Nexus. I've had it
for about a year. I thought I'd hate the virtual keyboard but it's great.
Definitely give the nexus 4 a look.

I have a Motorola Pro+. It's what you would get if you mated a Blackberry and an Android phone together. I think it can only be ordered from the UK though.

this one?

though the main problem I see is a lot of apps expect a widescreen display
(800x480 et al), not a standard VGA one.

Tim, have you tried Swype and Swiftkey?  They're both pretty amazing, in slightly different ways.

I've heard of many people who insisted on a QWERTY phone, then, once they tried a good onscreen keyboard, hardly ever used the physical one.

If you get a phone that's popular enough, you're likely to find Bluetooth keyboard accessories too.  They're all clunky to varying degrees, but they're an option.  e.g.

Anyway, my general recommendations:

- Strongly prefer a "pentaband" phone, which will work on every Canadian carrier;
- If you can spare a bit of cash up front, strongly consider buying used from Craig in preference to going on contract.  You can find phones that are a few weeks old and 30-50% off retail, without much difficulty. (I paid $275 for my HTC One S)

Yup +10 on Pentaband, though make sure it's for both voice and data, then you
can use it on Wind/Mobilicity or any of the other major carriers without
issue. including data.

If you don't have Penta, here's what's happens.

With my Bell DesireZ, both voice and 3g data works fine on Rogers, Fido, Bell
etc, on Wind/Mobilicity you can voice service but at best 2g data (ie 56k
modem speeds)

With my T-Mobile G2, the situation is reversed, works good with
Wind/Mobilicity, with voice but only 2gb data with Rogers. Fido etc.

I've heard people say that about swype, but I'm not totally buying it. Give
me my physical keyboard damn it!

I've had swype on both my phones for 18+ months but still not a huge fan. It
IS far better than the built-in onscreen keyboard though and I do find myself
swyping and then cursing when on an ios device for some reason.

I do a lot of password entry and I am always typing part numbers. I
just like the ability to line my finger up by feel on the physical
kbd.

yes a android 4 phone with kdb == heaven

I'll admit to being a semi-convert thanks to Swype.    I'd still prefer a physical keyboard, but swype makes it mostly bearable.

motorola pro is very similar to my huawei,
guess I replace my stolen second battery. and continue with it.

But it can only run one app at a time without getting too slow to be usable.

"mostly bearable", yeah I could agree with that.
