This one may sound very lame and simple, but could someone maybe run a night on how to set up and use GitHub [and maybe SVN, make it a version-control night in general?]

It is something I keep wanting to learn but never really get around to teaching myself, a night on it would be great.

on windows and OSX there is a great app made by github.com that interfaces with their repository system and makes it *so easy*.
I'd be happy to show you next time I'm at the space.

I despise the github.com app. :) It's tried to be all Windows 8 Metro-ish and in the process has skipped on some pretty essential functionality; going for form over function.

I use Source Tree on both OSX and Windows. It's free, has great usability, and works with pretty much everything Git/github and Mercurial: http://sourcetreeapp.com/

As with all GUI wrappers that live on top of complex CLI tools, something is definitely lost in translation. I haven't seen any good GUI interfaces for GIT yet, and the cmdline is really powerful. The hard part of GIT is grokking how it actually works, not the command line tools (although they are occasionally a bit obtuse). A pretty GUI wrapper that prevents some workflows isn't going to help you out much.

Do you need to grok GIT to benefit from versioning your coding projects or to use GitHub effectively?

No, but once you grok it enough for it to be useful, the keyboard commands are easy enough to use that they aren't an obstacle.

My $0.02 though, take with a grain of salt.
