Hello all,
According to the meeting notes, we have myself Dani and Kate on this
teem so far. I think i might be missing one or two people.

Anyway, how do we want to get started? I have some ideas of things
that I think we should be getting. I think we will need not only an
Aboriginal component to the forum, but also a component and
acknowledging that we are doing this forum on there land. We may also
want to have some drumming or something to begin the form. What does
everyone think? If everyone is agreement, i have some contacts i can
check out. Does anyone have anyone else they think would be good?

besides that, what do we think is going to be our first step? I was
thinking that we may want to focus on creating a rough outline how the
weekend will look, not that this has to be set in stone. Second I was
thinking that we may need a strategy to ask the trans Qmunity and
professionals what they are looking for.

One workshop/ session i was thinking we may want anyway is a trans 101
for those professionals who are just starting out or others who would
like the basics to start with. if this sounds like a good idea, I was
thinking Kimothy as he is the new Education and outreach person at
Qmunity. I just sent an invitation to participate to Qmunity and
Kimothy presenting was one of those possibilities of participation,
although a trans 101 was not discussed as of yet. Either that, Or I
can do it quite easily. or who else where we thinking.

Anyway, those are some initial questions and thoughts that I had.

Namaste,
Corey

Hi all,

I'm happy to support this Committee however I can.

I think having a two spirit/Aboriginal component would be great! I know PRISM is in the process of putting together a two spirit workshop for service providers, just puttin it out there.

That is a good thought.  I am also in contact with a couple two-Spirit organizations.  One is specifically a spiritual organization and focuses on sweats and that.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling on this Corey!

A few things:

1) I love your idea of having a large aboriginal component to the forum (ie: acknowledging the land we are on, drumming).  I think we should definitely get in touch with Urban Native Youth Association and Aboriginal Wellness Program asap to see if they're into running a facilitated discussion/workshop.  Also, I was thinking it'd be nice to have a key note address about indigenous, two-spirit issues...does anyone have a particular person in mind?

2) I think it'd be swell if we drafted up a rough schedule, of what we already have offered + what we would like to see. I'll try and draft mine up tonight and we can compare and contrast what other folks were thinking

3) I think having a trans 101 for providers would be great and I definitely support getting someone who's trained in that field (like Kimothy) to facilitate it. Also,  I think it'd be productive if we offerred a couple trans 102 workshops (haha) that were more nuanced and geared toward different sectors (health care providers, social service/housing/front line providers, union reps/employers).
4) In order to get input from the larger trans community, maybe we could write up a call out for workshop proposals, to see what energy/topics folks want to bring to this.  The deadline could be around june 15th. That way we could choose which ones we want, finalize the schedule, and announce the workhsops a full month before the event.

5) You'll see when I send my schedule draft but I thought I'd note it here too that I still feel it's very important to leave as many "free blocks" open as possible, so that folks can organize their own facilitated discussions/workshops on the days of the forum. Also, starting out each day with a giant, ad hoc, "everyone present" facilitated discussion is my ideal vision for a community forum.
Talk to ya'll soon.
xoxo

Hi all,

I have a meeting with Marie Haldane, a Victim Support Educator at Aboriginal Wellness Program tomorrow. I can let her know about the forum and about our interest in having someone speak if people are OK with me doing that.

Hey Rebecca,

That sounds like a great contact, you should *totally* talk to her about being a part of the forum :)

ok, so here's my draft schedule:

Friday
5:00pm-7:00pm - Dinner, Socializing, Ice breakers, Aboriginal Drumming, etc

7:00-8:00pm - Film Screening: Cruel & Unusual (a documentary about trans women incarcerated in male institutions)

8:00pm-9:00pm - Key Note Speaker - Sadie-Ryanne Baker from the DC Trans Coalition (discussing how DCTC managed to change the policy of the DC Jail to incarcerate folks based on gender identity and not genitals)

9:00pm-closing - Sober dance party + board games room.

Saturday:

8:00am - Light Breakfast & socializing (baked goods + coffee)

9:00am - "everyone included" discussion on what folks think should be talked about during the forum--> throughout this discussion, a volunteer would ideally be synthesizing what folks are saying into broad categories (ie: criminalization, housing, jobs, families, youth issues, etc) so we can then slot those topics into the "free blocks"

10:00am - 12:00pm - a) PRISM's facilitated discussion on substance use in the trans community (bigger room)

10am (smaller room) - "free block - open topic"

11am (smaller room) - "free block - open topic:"

12:00pm - a) Lunch + music/comedy/spoken word (in the larger room) + b) short film screening (in the smaller room)

1:00pm - 3:00pm a) Self Defence Workshop (large room) +  b) Youth CO Theatre Troupe Presentation (geared more for youth) (smaller room)

3:00pm - 5:00pm - a) Know Your Trans Rights Workshop (with Pivot?) (large room)
  + b) "free block - open topic" (smaller room - 1 hour)
  + c) "free block - open topic" (smaller room - 1 hour)

5:00pm-6:00pm - Key Note Speaker on two spirit/indigenous trans issues

6:00pm - onward - SWIMMING!!!!!!

Sunday

8:00am - Light Breakfast & socializing (baked goods + coffee)

9:00am -11am - a)  Nuts and bolts of lobbying to change police policy workshop (w/ Sadie-Ryanne Baker) (large room)

+ b) Marria Townsend, presenting the results of a community-based trans health survey in BC last year (smaller room - 1 hour)
+ c) Marcus Greatheart presenting the results of his thesis on the satisfaction of trans guys' top surgeries (smaller room - 1 hour)

11am - noon - a) "free block - open topic" (smaller room - 1 hour)
                     b) "free block - open topic" (larger room - 1 hour)

12:00pm to 1:00pm - a) Lunch + music/comedy/spoken word (in the larger room) + b) film screening (in the smaller room)

1:00pm-3:00pm - a) Trans 101 for service providers (large room)
                          b) Panel Discussion with Out on Campus, UBC Womyn's Centre, SFU  Women's Centre, etc on issues affecting trans folk at school (smaller room)

3:00pm-5:00pm - a) Police Liason Workshop/Discussion (outside of Rhodes College)
                          b) "free block - open topic" (whichever room isn't being used during that time)

5:00pm-6:00pm - Keynote speaker to bring it all home, preferrably a Vancouver-based community organizer (ie: Lucas Walter, Devon MacFarlan)

6:00pm - onward - MARCH!!!!

What do ya'll think? Is it too structured? Too loose? How does it compare to what other folks were thinking? Things to be added? Taken away?

A million questions :)

Having an open programming track sounds good, but I'd like to be able to invite some folks in, give them a chance to prepare something wonderful and a confirmed time/place to offer it.
Having recently been through an unconference experience, I found there was a lot of unused blocks, and a lack of preparation on the part of the presenters.

I think that structure is great.  I have a couple suggestions though.

I am thinking for sunday, we may want a little more structure as professionals are generally need a bit more structure....from the frame of reference they are coming from.  Secondly, this is a bit of train the trainers, so there may be some room to get more facilitators here.  Where as, leaving a few open sessions for Saturday is great, as that is the period where we want to hear the voices from the community anyway (primarily).

In terms of the trans 101, i was thinking we may want to have this in one of the first slots, as this may be critical to understand the rest of the conference for those that are just learning.  Maybe even have this saturday, as both allies and professionals may want this.  Then if we do have a trans 102 or something, that can be on sunday.

@ Corey-->
I absolutely love your ideas, they're always so insightful.  I agree that having even more focus/structure (ie: less open track) for day 2 might be better suited to our vision.

Personally though, I feel as though having a trans 101 early on in the forum could give the impression that our intended audience is cis folk/allies/etc.  Nonetheless, I do agree it's can be useful in setting the tone for the rest of the forum.  What about if we had the trans 101 happening in the smaller room at the same time as the giant, opening discussion in the larger room? That way, trans people and cis folks who are already familiar with trans issues/communities could delve into the deeper issues right away, while the folks who are totally new to this community/language could play catch up, so to speak :P
@ Dani--->
I agree that we should be looking for as many folks who want to present.  My only hesitation is in that we don't completely scrap the "open-track."

My understanding of the way the unconference was promoted was that folks were supposed to have shown up, already with presentations/workshops/lectures prepared (or at least semi-prepared).  I feel as though the open track of this forum would have a slightly different approach, in that it would be less about more formal workshops and more about facilitated discussions.

Another idea, that I think you were getting at at the last meeting Dani, is that we could do a call out for open-discussion topics (ie: what issues would be talked about at your ideal trans forum?). We could then send out the call out via the web but also by going to the local trans support groups and asking folks. That way we could do a lot of the grunt work before the forum. We wouldn't have to leave much open space because prior to the forum, we'd already have an idea of the general themes people want discussed.  If it works well enough, we could probably even scrap the "general everyone welcome discussion."
I'm curious if you have anyone specific in mind/a workshop in mind?

Cheers:
Kate

"Did I have anyone or anything in mind?", She asks.
Here's my little list.

barbara finlay on Nixon/Rape Relief and Lu's Pharmacy, a comparison of tactics and results.

Kevin Wilson, Lukas Walther, romham gallacher and . . . , a panel on local FtM history (the MtF panel might be too volatile to ever happen).

MtF Roundtable on HRT

FtM Roundtable on HRT

Changing our transworld, a discussion of what comes next. Open panel disc (pick me, I'll be on that one).

S. Bear Bergman, Trans sex, how we deal. Trans only facilitated disc.
(if he does come, I'd also want him to do his "Turning Up the Flirt" WS :o)

Ivan E. Coyote, telling our stories.

Susan Stryker and . . . , breaching the halls of academia.

Lee Harrington, Transition and the Mystic.

Partnered to a tranny, how weird is that? Cis partners facilitated disc.

Rae Spoon, changing voices.

Catherine White Holman, remembering our allies. Open panel disc.
(if it isn't too soon)

Parents of Trans Kids, what our kids need help with. Open panel disc.

Trans Youth. Trans youth only un/facilitated disc.

Do I need surgery or hormones to be trans? Non op/no ho, a discussion of other paths.

Trans Parents, raising our kids as we raise ourselves. Open panel disc.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

There's 'prolly a few more that weren't quite ready to float to the top my brain this morning, but that's a decent starting point.

I want an open track, it will find the things we're missing and give folks a chance to make what they need, but there are people and subjects that require a bit of planning, and I don't want to lose that.

Maybe on Day 2, something about supporting trans youth or transphobia in schools?

I only say this b/c I do work on transphobia and homophobia in schools so it's something I'm always thinking about.

I also highly recommend the trans workshop put on my SHARP Access Project at PRISM for service providers.

hey All,

Kate -->  In regards to the trans 101, I agree that there may be an issue regarding the workshop being perceive just for cis/allies/ ect.  Although, with having it at the same time as the keynote is that this is the time to get everyone together, no matter who the participant is, to be together as a community.  And so I see it important for everyone to be together.  The only thing I can think of is maybe if we create two trans 101s (obviously different names).  one being focused on Cis/allies/ family members/ ect and the other for professionals.  As we were thinking of having a trans 1032 anyway.  Then they have a slightly different focus and then if a professional can still get something out of the first if the fit in both worlds - ally and a professional but they know what they are geared for.  Then we won't have to have it at the same time as the keynote.  The only way I can solve this conundrum....lol.

Also, I think what you had in the rough schedule in regards to a trans right presentation is really a good idea as well.  Do we know if Pivot can do this?

Rebecca -->  In terms of having an Aboriginal speaker, the question I pose I think is an important one.  As she may have done a lot of great work, but if there is not relationship to the topic at hand, there can be a loss in meaning.  Even if she has had a lot of work with the trans/ Two-spirited community or if she has family members...then she has a personal or professional connection.

I like the idea in regards to trans youth or trans phobia in the schools.  I was wondering if there could be a piece in regards greating supports for youth or teachers in schools to create those safe spaces.  I am really big on linking the issues at hand to talking about tangible tools.  even if those tools come out of a discussion from the audience.

Dani -->  Great ideas.  I will need time to root through them all as there are alot.  My only comment is in regards to Lucas.  I would love to get Lucas, however, he has been on sick leave for some time now.  And I am not sure what is happening there.  So if we could track him down, that would be awesome.  However, I thought i would point that out so everyone is aware.

All -->  I have an idea that we could do.  I was wondering if we could do a panel with gender queer/fluid or anyone stepping outside the gender binary.  As this may be good for professionals/ allies to hear these stories, and concerns that come from the binary thinking.  I think Devon would be awesome to be apart of this panel.

Hi all,

I went to finish up the parade application and discovered I don't have the times for the setup, start, end and takedown. I need answers to these in the next 45 minutes if I'm going to get the application in this afternoon. If not, it'll be Tuesday. Also, and this is probably more the Funding Committee's baileywick, the required insurance for the parade is going to run us about $385. Ouch.

Hi Emily,
Sorry, I could not get back to in time.  I just got home and it is about 6:20.  Also, because I don't have an answer to any of these questions.  I am thinking maybe bring this to the meeting on sunday.  In terms of the funding, I am not sure.  We don't have any funding proposals put through as of yet.  I would check with fund raising committee.

Namaste,
Corey

Uh first off the term "Older 'Tranies/Older Trannies" - is that what they are calling themselves?
-- if not i think we all shouldn't used the word 'trannies' to talk about other people/groups -unless that is the official name of the group.

Amber:  me ?
Aboriginal Drummers & keynote = ** I'm working on it.
Two-Spirit -> Spirituality - ** Trying to get a speaker
+ a medicine person to open/close smudge.

Who do we know that would be good for these sessions:
Trans sex = Ice *if they can- was told last night may not be able to attend- will confirm as soon as i know*

Trans & of Color = local people i've asked declined. they are booked for the summer.

Who is in contact with:
Lucas = from 3 Bridges is on leave.

Sounds great Amber!
in terms of the word 'trannies', we can definately change the name.  Most of the names on the schedule was very rough was mostly intended so we have some idea what the session is about.

It would have been nice to decide this change two weeks ago before I booked the pool. I worked out 6:30 to 8:30 with the programming director more than a week ago (public swim ends at 6, so 6 to 6:30 is getting the general public out of the pool), there was no problem with that at the last meeting, but suddenly the collective has changed things overnight. I see it's already gone up on the Facebook group as 7 to 9; people are going to be a little disappointed when the swim ends half an hour earlier than advertised.

(Whoops, sent this just to Shannon and not to the list.) Talked to the pool people; tenatively confirmed as extended to 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM Saturday July 24th. (Lifeguards had already been booked from 6:30 to 8:30, this extends them an additional half-hour.) Still waiting to hear back from the program director about rates.
