hey folks,
i know it might be premature (totally lol) but i thought it might be
useful to start collecting info for the next Trans Forum. How to do
things smoother, important things to consider further ahead of time,
that kind of thing.
i know everyones got limited time and energy, but perhaps there will
be some space where you can peruse this.

Below is one contribution dealing with issues around race. It deals
with the Queer Disability Conference that took place in SanFrancisco
in 2002. Theres a letter in response to an article in BENT
( http://www.bentvoices.org/home.html )
talking about the reality that disabled queers of colour and queers
with cognitive/learning disabilities etc did not feel included in the
conference, and certainly not in the organizing. The coversations that
happened at the end of the Trans Forum are not the first, and
certainly wont be the last of the conversations happening around how
POC are or are not part of organizing and participating in these kinds
of things, but sometimes it can help for folks to look to specifics.
Here is the letter and response:
http://www.bentvoices.org/bentvoices/donovan.htm

There was also a conference in Victoria in 2004 called TransMission
Festival that was fraught with racism and defensiveness. There was a
statement put out called "Racism at the Transmission Festival", which
is no longer available online (that i could find anyways, if anyone
knows of an online dic, let me know!), but i have a paper copy of it
if anyone is interested. Its a particularly good (as well as really
difficult) document as it chronicles the email conversations on the
matter of race and racism in the organizing. It is a tool that others
can use for sure.

Anyways, just wanted to start some conversation, some resource sharing
and such.
i hope yall are recovering and geting your energies back

much love,
romham

Hi romham,

I attended the TransMission festival in 2004 and was friends with some of the organizers at the time, and heard second-hand from them that there was a lot of toxic infighting and last-minute cancellations and people quitting the planning committee (hmm, familiar?), but I never got the complete scoop as to why and I didn't want to pry. I'd be interested in taking a look at that document, it might answer some of the questions I've had in the years since, as well as being a record of other peoples' experiences to put towards future Trans Forums as well as other trans festivals.

yeah i also had a number of friends involved in various angles of the discussion, and i had planned on attending, but ended up not because of all of it. the document is important i think as a tool for others, yknow? im more than happy to lend it out (i'll make a photocopy so i dont lose my original).

well, its actually not a program, its a piece of equipment you run the document through and it makes an electronic copy. amazing stuff! a friend gave me a printer/photocopyer/scanner a couple years ago but i dont have the right cord for it and have never gotten aroud to getting it (not exactly cheap). so i thought someone out there might have the technology. ive put it out on my facebook, theres likely someone on there :)
