Can we also have a discreet area for people who need to dilate?

Good question.  we may be able to use one of the bathrooms.  I am still waiting from Paul to reply back to have the tour.  Once we do that, we can see what the best options are.

on the subject of ASL My contact said this:

BC Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf - can't find a site for them that's current
this site for the Wellbeing Program http://www.facebook.com/l/9c007;deafwellbeing.vch.ca/home.htm has some numbers.

I know Marjorie Cameron is a lesbian (and really nice) so you could contact her.
She's  TTY so call Telus and ask for the "Message Relay Service" (voice-to-TTY)

The other place I can think of is the Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters - http://www.facebook.com/l/9c007;www.wavli.com - don't know much about them but I do know their past (?)/present (?) president Geoff Chiasson is a gay man.

Hey folks, just wondering if you can get an estimate as to how much we
would need for an ASL interpreter for the forum so we can have an
estimate for the budget when we apply for funds.

Thanks!

Here is another resource for ASL interpretors.
PI Interpreters - a National Interpreting Association
- http://www.pisigns.com/aboutus.html

will say everything that is signed and sign everything that is spoken.
They will not add to, edit, or censor the conversation.

-donates a portion of every contract to various charities.

Sounds good. Has anyone contacted them yet?
If not i will do so this week.

Susi Bolender is the perso who runs this agency, and is the first interpreter who would offer to work with us at Metro Vancouver Kink interpreting workshops on various kink topics, im sure she would be down for this. if no one has time to contact her id be happy to. Let me know?

Hey ya'll,

Couple questions:

1) Where are things at with the ASL interpreters? Also, when I was drawing up a budget, I wrote $400 in for ASL, is that accurate? More? Less?

400 = (20 hours X $20/hour)

2) Are we still doing childcare? Dani, can we still use your meeting room at Aaron Webster's Housing Co-Op? I was thinking $15/hour X 2 people at a time = $30/hour X 30 hours = $900 total

Also,

@ Romham---> Just wanted to respond to a few of the audit recommendations:

1) We would *super* appreciate if you could help us with "Ensure high contrast, large font directions to all w/c access spaces; gender neutral washroom and dilation room signage"

2) Concerning the steps from the rooms to the outside (Recommendation #19), I don't believe we will be using those during the forum. To my knowledge, all smoking will take place at the entrance to the 1125 howe building.<---just a heads up :)

3) Do you have a specific brand on scent-free soap that you prefer (ie: least scented perhaps)?

Can I also just take a moment to (personally) thank you again for doing this audit, it's really made me aware of a lot of things I had never considered before!

Hi Kate (and everyone),
re #2) I'm pretty sure we can book the community room no problem. I was thinking about trying to set up a coop care (parents/caregivers take turns) situation, so we wouldn't be committed to such a heavy labour bill, but it is a pain in the ass to organize and monitor. Let's hope the SFPIRG $ comes though.

Cool!

I know right, it is such a hefty bill *eep* But, I feel strongly that we should be paying people for the work that they do making our community events more accessible you know?

That said, I also *love* co-op's shares.  Maybe we could do some combination?  1 paid person + more free floating volunteers?

Cheers:

im not sure where this calculation came from, but for a 90 minute
workshop for example with the group i mentioned, it costs $100 +
taxes. It is now very late in the game. The call should have gone out
some time ago, but my best suggestion is to put the call out
immediately asking folks to get back to you by a certain date with
their needs re ASL, and work from there, and contact Susi Bolender
immediately to arrange interpreters.

re communal dilation: Just a heads up... please be aware that all
kinds of folks need to dilate: i.e. you will have folks who are women,
and some who are men, and some who identify otherwise who may need
access to the space. Folks who have undergone phalloplasty need to
dilate as well, for example. As such, you need to ensure it is not set
up as a "women only" type space, unless you plan on having options
around that. Just be clear.

re: "1) We would *super* appreciate if you could help us with "Ensure
high

i am totally all over it.

re: non scent soaps, yeah the Sweet Cherubim down the road has the
kind we use at MVK, about $5.50/bottle. if you like i can pick them up
(and get reimbursed at the conference?). If so, should i get 4?

also, regarding smoking, it should be noted that smoking really should
happen away from the entrances to the building (folks shouldnt have to
walk through a cloud of smoke!) and air intake ducts.

and about the thanks on the audit, im super glad it was informative!
it keeps growing as i learn new stuff, as folks let me know whats
missing, come up with other ideas/questions. im really glad that its
helping folks get a better picture of accessibility. makes my heart
swell!

i still have no information about what to ask of her. specifically, i
need to know what your plans are: are you wanting to provide it on an
as-requested basis, or standard? if there is someone/s who requires
interpretation, will they require someone there the whole day/s? or
what workshops/events will they be attending? etc. Who does she get in
contact with regarding payment? what is your budget? etc

a good topic to bring to the meeting this weekend.

i don't think there's a way to foresee how many - if any- attendees will need these services. or for how long.

so i am guessing... it would be good to provide this service for - at least- the key note speakers.

Friday 7pm - 8pm.
Saturday 5pm - 6 pm?
Sunday 5 - 530pm  feedback session

we'd need 2 ppl - one to sign what the presenter says and another to sign any audience questions.

maybe keep one on standby each day?- to accompany anyone who needs them to be at other workshops.

its not a matter of foreseeing it, its about putting it out there that
if folks get the notice ahead of time and know they will require it,
TF can ensure its there. It doesnt seem to me based on the budget that
the group can afford to have interpreters covering the entire
conference. i can contact Douglas college as well, but its very short
notice, and for such an undertaking youve got to have more experienced
folks as well, and that costs bucks.
i agree it should at the least be provided for keynotes, and that as
many items which can be available visually.

Hey all,

That "budget" I wrote up for it was completely a shot in the dark, uninformed, I have-no-idea-what-this-costs type of thing so please do not see it as set in stone :)

I think we should put the call out today, for sure.

How does this sound?

Hey ya'll,

The Vancouver Trans Forum is formalizing some accessibility points right now and we were wondering if people requiring childcare and/or ASL interpretation could contact us ASAP so that we know how best to meet your needs.

1) For folks requiring ASL interpretation, if you could please list the workshops & keynotes that you plan on attending that would be great.

2) For folks requiring child care, could you please list:
 a) the number of children you have,
b) the length of time you require childcare for (including the friday night dance party, the all-body swim, & the trans pride march, if necessary),
 c) if your child has any specific accessibility needs
d) if you're willing to volunteer with childcare (ie: co-op style childcare)

Thank you.  Can't wait to see you there!

I dunno, what do folks think of that?

normally, dilation therapy for FTM folks is done under sedation by a

want it to be clear that you may have men in the space.

RE: ASL interpreters - ones i asked confirmed they are on vacation -
or busy!

Good news is there is an major conference going on this week -
http://www.iced2010.com/
21st International Congress on Education of the Deaf (ICED).

This means that many interpreters are in town!

They have a community, call out, mailing list server - so i sent them
this request.

Hi There!

We are having a community forum for transgendered folks this weekend,
July 23rd - 25th, 2010 @ Rhodes Wellness College in Vancouver, BC.
see http://vancouvertransforum.com/

We are in need of at least two volunteer interpreters for the keynote
speakers.
(It is possible that some small financial compensation could be
arranged.)

Friday, July 23rd, 7pm - 8pm
Saturday, July 24th, 5pm - 6pm
Sunday, July 25th, 10 am - 12pm

It would also be nice to have people interpret for the Forum End
Planner: 5 - 530 pm on Sunday.

If some folks would rather come to the workshops and be available on
an 'as needed basis' that would be great too!

We'd also love to have some sign-singers available at the live-
performance/dance party on Friday night 8:30 - 11pm.

Admission to the forum would be free and some meals would be provided.

Please email: volu...@vancouvertransforum.com

or attend the Volunteer Orientation Meeting
Thursday, July 22nd @ 6pm in Spartacus Books
(684 East Hastings, between Heatley & Princess)

Thank you and have a great summer!

~Vancouver Trans Forum

We see this is an opportunity for the communities of trans people,

I hope to hear back before Friday. If not there are pro's we can hire
but they charge 55/hr minimum 2 hrs.

I have the childcare space booked (five child max, with two caregivers, no cost).
I'll take bookings over the phone (604-639-6640 [it's a landline]) or email.
I'm going to need some help to bang out a waiver (necessary).
I'll be available Friday night, Saturday (daytime and during the swim), and Sunday until all events are over.
Dreya (my roomie) will be available to help Sunday and possibly Saturday.
Food will have to brought out either with the smalls or delivered.
Please take me off this list and communicate over the phone or personal email.

I hope you have a successful event,

Dani
