Hey all, Jaap here posted to the x-risk network looking to get out of the games industry, and into a hard programming job that directly helps with x-risk, does anyone know of such a company?

Jup, East Van. (probably best to take local/area-specific discussion off the list I wonder?)

I'm not aware of any such companies, but there's a few of us in the area, most of whom I don't think are on this list. Do you live in Vancouver?

Hello,

Is anybody aware of any X-Risk (or tangentially related) companies located in the Vancouver BC, Canada area that have a need for hard programming skills (i.e., not looking for web-design or iPhone app development, thinking more along the lines of low-level performance engineering by moving some legacy Perl DNA analysis scripts over to the GPU for 100x performance improvements -- as just one example, could be anything).

Been in games industry for far too long, time to make better use of my time.

Thanks,

In Vancouver? Good luck, I don't know of any. If any such company does exist, someone on this list would know of it.

Isn't Carrie wanting to do a cryonics thing here? How's that going? Not X-risk, but appeals to the same crowd.

Hi Jaap, I'm interested in the answer to this question.

I don't have much help I can offer (yet) but I also live in East Van and am a programmer working to reduce x-risk, but from a donations angle at the moment (with only partial success. I save badly.) I'd be interested in brainstorming some time.

One crappy suggestion for a hard programming job to reduce x-risk is to apply stats and machine learning to forecasting of decision relevant info. This sounds fun and hard and I don't think you can find a job doing it without working remotely, and even then there's probably only a few in the world. Again, I'd love to get coffee and brainstorm and/or research.

The cryonics company lost it's major potential funding source and is unlikely to happen soon, though Carrie hasn't given up. We only have about 10% of the required funds.
