Does the City have plans to include the types of issues in the list of outstanding bylaw infractions? Having the dates of when issues were cleared/declared outstanding would be helpful too.

If this isn't in the plan, what does the City think of us screen scraping what we need?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi David,

For the open data hackathon I scraped the data for the outstanding infractions.  My code and some documentation is here https://github.com/lukec/van-rental-issues#readme

The scrape job is not very difficult, as there is not too much data, and the webserver seems fast.  The only downside is that you "don't know what you don't know" with respect to past violations.

I told the city that it would be good to see the actual infractions, I think it's something they'll release in the future. (just guessing)  They also have concerns about only exposing the most recent data too, IIRC.

Best,
Luke

Luke, thanks for sharing what you learned.

David, we are working toward publishing the lat/long for the properties in the rental property standards dataset, but we are still constrained on the resource to do this.  We will let you know as soon as we have some news on this.  We do not currently have plans to publish the property bylaw infraction details, but will consider it for future enhancement.  In the mean time you are welcome to scrape this data from our website."

Thanks for the update, Linda.

We have solved the lat/long problem for ourselves by augmenting your data set with geocoordinates and hosting it on our server.

We update our host with a daily extract from the city and then geocode any new entries. We also grab a formatted address which includes the postal code.
Our RentalDog app is now wired to pull from our host only; however, we still include a link to your Terms of Use and credit the city for providing the data.

We would like to offer access to this augmented data set if if would be helpful to anyone.

David, I am curious to find out how you solved the problem.  We didn’t have success using Google’s geocoding API and we were working on getting the data from another source.  Would you be interested to share your success story with our programmer next week?

Hi Linda,

Google finalized their deprecation of the V2 Geocoding API on March 8 (announced last year), forcing everyone to switch over to V3. The parameters are slightly different, also the structure of the payload has changed.

I'd be happy to talk with your programmer next week. She/he can email me directly to set up a time.

Is the recent work by San Francisco and Code for America relevant to the rental property standards dataset?

It is a very new effort. Several municipalities have committed to adopting it; only two so far create data according to the spec.
