to Vancouver Community Gardens
Vancouver Urban Agriculture Network
2 Feb 2009 Meeting

present: David, Brent, Chris, Sharon, Peter, Cylia

Approval of Agenda - carried

Approval of Minutes of Previous Meeting -- tabled until next meeting

Review of group history and Terms of Reference (adopted 11 June 2007)
-- Began in May 2007 from a call for a support group during first
citywide forum held by and for community gardeners. Members were
responding to City of Vancouver plan for 2010 additional community
garden plots and talk of new city guidelines for community gardens.
VUAN exists to enhance urban agriculture through mutual support and
policy advocacy.

Urban Agriculture Design Guidelines for the Private Realm (city) --
Merits of new policy discussed. Group felt the guidelines are not very
strong, but that their influence at this stage is minimal.

New city guidelines on community gardening – still being discussed by
city staff. Confusion over jurisdiction for urban agriculture among
various departments continues. VUAN communication with city
Engineering over when the new guidelines will be ready, and projects
on hold thus able to proceed, has not sped up the process. Cylia to re-
post letter asking for clarification.

Urban Agriculture Steering Committee – a new cooperation from senior
city managers from various departments to sort out the city hall mess.
The UASC held a joint info meeting with the Vancouver Food Policy
Council, but stated they were not willing to include the public in
their meetings.

New community gardens – new gardens are being created, which means
more community gardeners and others interested in urban agriculture.
Potential for outreach to see if any are interested in VUAN
activities. David to forward information about the various gardens to
Cylia.

Other business -- First Monday of each month from 6-7pm will be our
regular meeting date. Next meeting will be on March 2, 2009 at Charles
Square Co-op at 6 p.m. As the weather becomes warmer and daylight
hours longer we will be meeting in the Pavillion at Strathcona
Community Garden.

Meeting adjourned at 6:50 p.m.
