Folk,

Marius asked me to write up something for the wiki and I took a quick
look at it and it's missing a category index on the front page. One can
browse categories but that's not really a page.

Does anyone know offhand how to easily convert this:

http://www.vanagonwiki.net/wiki/Special:Categories

Into an editable page? That would be a good start.

I'm not sure there's a great way to do this. I'd imagine over time that the
Categories list will grow substantially over time.

What specifically isn't convenient about Special:Categories? I think it's
fairly straightforward. Also, once the categories grow, then MediaWiki
starts grouping the Categories by alphabetical groups, etc.

Hm -- okay, "Browse Categories" seems sensible though I guess I'm
expecting a page with a list of categories which can be edited. Call it
a Table of Contents, maybe.

So help a brother out here. I used to be able to click "edit" on a page
and add a link to a new (not yet created) page, then click on that link
and use the editor to create the new page.

So, how do I create a page under, say, the "category "Westfalia"?

(I'm missing the Create New Page option, and a way to assign category,
maybe?)

Ah. So, if you create a page and know the category you want it in, you edit
the page and include [[Category:Refrigerator]] in it somewhere. Not sure
what the right way to do it via the fancy GUI editor, as I don't use it.

I'm not seeing a "create page" button.

Ok. I'll look into how to automate that, but for now: in the search box,
type the name of the page you want to create, hit "Go", and then on the
following page (where it tells you it didn't find it), hit the "create this
page" link.

Perfect. We need a less-obvious way to do this. Someone might figure it
out.

The way to do it, as I understand it and did it, was to start by placing
a page link on a page, like the home page. Then when you click on it,
the wiki says the page doesn't exist and offers to let you create it.
This is a nice top-down way of going about it and felt fairly intuitive.

I'll create a link to a (non-existent) Index page, then create it using
the special categories listing, then link to those pages from the Index
page.

This is perfectly non-obvious, I don't know how to make it less obvious :)

We have to try harder, that's all. If we can come up with a method that
involves a chicken then I think we'll be getting close.

I'm so glad we have standards bodies for things like this.

Take a look at the wiki's home page now and see if what I've done makes
sense.
