Just a general thread beginning on data structures that I would
recommend for the wiki. Since it's specific to Vanagons, I really
actually do like the way that Bentley is grouped (i.e., section on
final drive, section on engine, etc.)

My $0.02 is that we have mediawiki categories for each of those major
sections, and mediawiki categories for years the article applies to.
For example, instead of Air-Cooled 81-83 (I think that's the Bentley
section, don't have it at the office with me), the article would then
be tagged with Engine, Air-Cooled, 1981, 1982, and 1983.

This way, people with an '82 wouldn't need to search for all possible
categories/tags that could include 1982, they'd just need to look for
1982.

For those proposing the index structure for the new wiki (NW) here is
the wayback machine's record of the index page:

========= BEGIN ===============

The Vanagon Wiki was created on August 7, 2007. It is intended to be a
central repository for all information Vanagon-related (however
loosely). Like the Vanagon.com list archives, the wiki will preserve and
convey the distilled wisdom of those who love, maintain, repair, and
modify these unique vehicles. But unlike the archives, these pages will
not only be quicker to access, they are "live," meaning that any
registered user can edit a topic for accuracy or clarity or add new
information as it comes along; and any registered user can create new
topic pages. If you consider yourself to be an expert in a particular
area then register (just "create account" in the upper right corner of
this page) and create a new page so others can benefit from your experience.

If you're tired of seeing the same question asked and answered every few
months on the gerry.vanagon.com newsgroup, then just write an article
which addresses that topic. Finally, if you can't figure out how to edit
or create pages here, then email your article to
Vanagon...@gmail.com and it will be posted!

The beauty (and curse) of MediaWiki is that it's a "flat" wiki meaning
any document can link to any other and hierarchy is entirely a
conceived notion since pages don't have a parent-child relationship to
other pages (categorization).

In other words, you could have one index by Bentley section, one index
by model year, and another index by ease of job, if you're so inclined
to create the page and forge the links. I think this is a great way to
create multiple approaches to the valuable information in the
articles.
