An employee of B.C. Women’s Hospital has been arrested after police say she was caught impersonating a nurse, an act she had been previously charged with in Ottawa this summer.

Brigitte Cleroux, 49, is said to have fraudulently used the name of a registered nurse and provided medical care to a number of Vancouver patients between June 2020 and June 2021, said Const. Tania Visintin of Vancouver Police, which launched an investigation into Cleroux’s work this June.

“We don’t yet know how many people in Vancouver may have received treatment from the fraudulent nurse, but we’re working with the Provincial Health Services Authority to identify patients.”

Visintin said detectives worked collaboratively with the Ottawa Police Service, “which was conducting a parallel investigation into the same suspect.”

In Ottawa, Cleroux was arrested Aug. 23 following an investigation into impersonation, criminal negligence, and fraud-related incidents after allegedly falsely gaining employment and conducting duties as a nurse at a medical and dental clinic in Ottawa.

The Ottawa Police Service did not identify what clinic Cleroux worked at, but said some of her duties included giving medications, including injections, to patients.

The woman was the subject of a bulletin issued by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives on June 30. The college said Melanie Smith — who also went by the aliases Melanie Thompson or Melanie Cleroux — had purported to be a registered nurse in B.C.

“(The) BCCNM received a report that Melanie Smith has held herself out as a registered nurse in British Columbia in order to seek employment in a hospital, dental surgery clinic, and in residential care,” it said. “This person has never been and is not a registrant of BCCNM and is not entitled to practise as a registered nurse in British Columbia.”

Cleroux, 49, remains in custody in Vancouver until her next court appearance. She has been charged with fraud over $5,000 and personation with intent.

None of the charges have been proven in court.
