------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi There!
I've been noticing that the SFU Highland Pub is hosting more and more
dance events -- Wednesdays they have swing and Mondays they have
latin. Will UBC ever catch up?
Next Friday Swing comes to Richmond and the Royal Canadian Legion will
be hoppin'. David and Andrea, of Silver Platter Productions, have
worked hard to decorate the hall in a USO Theme and find instructors
and assistants who will make the dances social. The BC Amateur
DanceSport Association is also sponsoring these dances -- a
continuation of the energy and fun that we enjoyed at the Robson
Square dances.
New dance lessons:
Salsa with Armando Pastor
Scandinavian dances with Scandinavian Dancers of Vancouver
Swing with UBC Swing Kids
Swing/Mambo/Ballroom with Barry Hall and Ian Kirconnell

Vancouver's Social Dancing Calendar
September 13, 1999 by Jason Harrison, harr...@cs.ubc.ca, phone: (604)
681-0062. Published every Monday by email, web, and handbill for
Vancouver's dancers.
This listing covers social dancing - partner dancing in a social venue
(club, dine and dance restaurant, party). If you are looking for
"American Style" or "Arthur Murray" dancing then the dine and dance
restaurants will do. Most clubs are either Salsa (with Merengue,
Cumbia, Cha Cha, Rumba and some Pop/Top-40s) or Swing (with Lindy,
Jive, West Coast Swing). The Argentine Tango events are marked.
If you are looking for "ballroom dancing" or "International Ballroom
Dancing" definitely try my other list which includes ballroom
competitions and performance dancing:

September 30-October 6, 1999: Susana's Tango Week with Miguel Angel
Pla of the National Academy of Tango in Buenos Aires
Miguel Angel Pla stands as one of Argentina's few remaining
teachers of true Salon Style tango. Well respected among the
Milongueros (Tango Dance Veterans) of Buenos Aires, he is
dedicated to maintaining the clean lines and impeccable posture
of traditional Salon style Tango. Instruction of this quality
is a firm basis to any Tango style. Few Tango teachers can
offer such a pure approach to Tango dance yet his repertoire
and vocabulary is vast. His natural musicality is present in
every demonstration of every step. It has inspired a genuine
love in his students of music from all of Tango's eras. His
Milonga class is not to be missed and his performance of
Canyengue is smashing.

September 30 to October 6, 1999: Susana's Tango Week with Miguel
Angel Pla
Tango week with Miguel Angel Pla of the National Academy
of Tango in Buenos Aires and his partner Lyn Taylor: a
third series of group and private classes with a
cherished Tango Master. In an effort to address the
consistent issue of low memory retention following
workshops held over a two day period, a series of 12
classes will be held over a stretch of 7 days. In
recognition of Miguel's exceptional manner with
individual students and his ability to address the
specific challenges of each student on a one-on-one
basis, all classes will be limited in their attendance to
8 leaders and 8 followers, (with the exception of
Saturday night's Beginner class just before the dance at
WISE hall). The classes are not progressive, so it is
possible to miss one of the four classes at your level
and still benefit from the next class. The only way to
reserve your spot in each class is to pay it in full on a
first come first served basis, as early as you wish.
Classes can be paid for through the mail, or by dropping
the fee off before or after one of my regular Tango
classes. The fees are non-refundable and
non-exchangeable, for obvious reasons. These biannual
workshops with Miguel are a strong support to any serious
Tango dancer's class routine. Susana's regular drop-in
Tango classes will be cancelled during this week to
accommodate Miguel's workshops.

Background Information on Miguel Angel Pla:
Miguel Angel Pla stands as one of Argentina's few
remaining teachers of true salon Style tango. Well
respected among the "Milongueros" (Tango Veterans) of
Buenos Aires, he is dedicated to maintaining the clean
lines and impeccable posture of traditional Salon style.
Few Tango teachers can offer such a pure approach to
Tango dance yet his repertoire and vocabulary is vast.
His musicality is present in every demonstration of every
step. It has inspired a genuine love in his students of
music from all of Tango's eras.
Miguel Angel Pla performed with the Orquestra del Tango
de Buenos Aires from 1994 to 1996. He has won several
notable awards throughout the years and danced in Alan
Parker's movie, Evita. Currently he teaches at the
National academy of Tango in Buenos Ares, giving classes
along-side Elvira de Virolaso, a featured performer of
Broadway's Tango Argentino. Tango is the ultimate
communication between two people. It begins with an
embrace, an initial sharing of affection, yet stresses
individual balance.
"The mastering of one's individual balance is what allows
two bodies to dance as one, along with a technique that
is clean and uncluttered, a form that is pure and a line
that is classical. The resulting elegance is sublime",
Miguel Angel Pla.
