Vancouver is more like Hollywood than it realizes. Let me give you an example.
Once I watched a film about the early days of a successful Hollywood produced. Names had been changed to protect the identity of the living. The producer was a Jewish hood from Chicago who relocated to Hollywood to go into the movie business.
The film showed the pre-production stage of one of his well-known features. When it came time to arrange financing, he contacted two other Jewish hoods who were in venture capital business. The Kosher brothers were apprehensive about the project, until the producer said that the film would be based on the next novel of a famous writer of the time. They asked to see a contract with the writer.
The producer said he didn’t have a contract, but he owned the writer’s head, just as if it was in a box, on a table in his office. The investors thought it was a joke, until the producer explained that he had a guy who lived in the writer’s head and that he wrote down the next novel, just as fast as the writer composed it. After being shown a sample of the almost completed next novel, they agreed to finance the film.
With the number of hoods in Vancouver living in other people’s heads, this type of activity would be a natural for the city.
