Police have busted an illegal gaming operation in Richmond, what investigators describe as “one piece of the larger organized crime puzzle” in the province.

A search warrant was issued at the start of December after an investigation by Richmond RCMP into a suspected gambling operation in a home in the 6000-block of Skaha Crescent.

The bust by the Richmond RCMP organized crime unit was assisted by the B.C. specialized anti-gang unit, Canada Border Services and a police dog squad.

Sixteen people in total were arrested, most of whom were actively gambling in the home. Two of them, a 45-year-old woman from Richmond and a 49-year-old man from Surrey, are alleged to have been caretakers of the gaming house.

Two others, a 34-year-old Richmond man and a 38-year-old Vancouver woman, were allegedly professional card dealers.

One of the caretakers and one of the card dealers weren’t Canadian citizens and are subject to deportation, said Richmond RCMP in a news release about the bust issued Wednesday.

A search of the home turned up more than $14,000 in Canadian currency, gambling ledgers, an automated mah-jong table, a poker table, chips and cards.

“Illegal gaming houses are one piece of the larger organized crime puzzle,” said Staff Sgt. Patrick Damgajian, commander of the Richmond organized crime unit. “Not only were we able to safely dismantle this gaming house, but we were able to gather valuable intelligence.”

Sgt. Brenda Winpenny of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of B.C. said gambling houses are often linked to organized crime and gang activity.

“Illegal gaming often has a nexus to other serious criminal offences and CFSEU-B.C. and our partners are collectively looking at every opportunity to work together and mitigate the negative impacts of organized crime in our communities,” said Winpenny.
