Compared to other brazen Lower Mainland gangland murders in recent years, the targeted shooting of Sandip Duhre in the lobby of Vancouver’s Sheraton Wall Centre on Jan. 17, 2012 was particularly disturbing.
Members of the Cuban women’s soccer team were among the hotel patrons and staff members sent scrambling for cover when a gunman shot Duhre as he ate inside a lobby restaurant just before 9 p.m.
Coolly and calmly, the shooter, with his face obscured by a scarf and his head covered, exited to the street. Duhre, a long-time gangster known as Dip, took several shots to the head.

Late Monday afternoon, a six-man, five-woman jury found two men who have been on trial for 14 months guilty of charges related to the murder.
The verdict came after more than three days of deliberations by the jury at the B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver.
Hells Angel Larry Amero, accused of conspiracy to commit murder in both the targeted execution of Duhre and the fatal shooting 11 months later of Duhre’s associate Sukh Dhak, was convicted on both counts.
Amero’s co-accused Rabih (Robby) Alkhalil was convicted of both conspiracy and first-degree murder in Duhre’s death. And he was found guilty of plotting to murder Dhak.
The next court appearance in the case is Wednesday to fix a date for sentencing.
The first-degree murder conviction for Alkhalil carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no parole eligibility for 25 years.
The alleged hitman, Dean Wiwchar, is scheduled to go to trial later on murder and conspiracy charges.
All three had links to the Wolfpack, a gang alliance whose members don crested jewelry that all three accused were photographed wearing.

The motive for the deadly Wall Centre attack was the equally audacious shooting outside the Kelowna Grand Okanagan Resort in August 2011 that left Wolfpack gangster Jonathan Bacon dead and Amero and three others wounded.
B.C. Supreme Court Justice Miriam Maisonville spent four days last week giving instructions to the jury before they began deliberations late Friday afternoon. She said they would have to decide whether Amero and Alkhalil were the authors of incriminating emails and texts that were at the heart of the Crown’s case.
They were found on a number of devices seized from the penthouse apartment that Amero and Alkhalil shared in Montreal in August 2012.
The purported Amero messages were sent under the names Skullbuster and Birdman, the jury heard. Alkhalil used the handle Where’s Waldo, and for a brief time Side Swiper, the Crown said.
At one point, Skullbuster said to Where’s Waldo that if he “was healed, we would have already drilled back, done this properly.” After Duhre was killed, Side Swiper wrote “dips dead” and “Chk th van news this week lol we put this city upside down.”
Maisonville noted that the users of the devices shared common traits with Amero and Alkhalil — the Birdman device user had a son with the same name and birthday as Amero’s son. The user had also been shot in the wrist in the Kelowna shooting. Skullbuster had a photo of Amero with Bacon and a comment — “he was my best friend.”

The Where’s Waldo device had photographs of Alkhalil on it. The user drove a Lamborghini, as did Alkhalil. The sender went to the Bahamas with someone named Kim. So did Alkhalil.
Lawyers for Amero and Alkhalil told jurors that the Crown had not proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt and others besides the two Wolfpack gangsters had access to the devices.
Alkhalil was not there to hear Richard Fowler’s closing arguments on his behalf because he escaped from North Fraser Pretrial Centre last month with the help of two men who posed as contractors at the Port Coquitlam jail. He has not been located.
Amero’s lawyer Marc-Antoine Rock argued that the West Point Hells Angel couldn’t have typed all those messages because of lingering issues with his injured wrist.
Prosecutors said CCTV video from the Wall Centre captured Alkhalil acting as a “spotter” for the hired hitman on the night of the shooting, and he was seen around the hotel both before and after the murder.
“The shooter had the skill and the composure to walk right up to Mr. Duhre in a public place, in a busy public restaurant, in full view of other people about, shoot Mr. Duhre multiple times and escape, without being immediately apprehended,” prosecutor Mark Sheardown said.

A room was booked in Alkhalil’s name at the Westin Bayshore with an arrival date of Jan. 10, 2012 and a departure date of Jan. 19.
What the jury didn’t hear during the trial is that Alkhalil had already been convicted of the June 2012 murder in Toronto of Johnny Raposo as he watched soccer at a Little Italy café. Alkhalil was serving a life sentence with no hope of parole for 25 years and in federal custody until he was brought to the North Fraser jail for his second murder trial. He was also awaiting trial on trafficking charges in Ontario at the time of his escape.
Duhre’s good friend Ruben Vivar was with him in the lobby restaurant just before the murder. Vivar stepped outside to smoke.
When he came back, Duhre was “face down on the table, as if he was looking out the window. And I could see holes on the top of his head, this man who I was just sitting with moments before, eating dinner, joking around.”
Vivar told jurors about the tense history between the Duhre family and the Alkhalils. They were “enemies.”
But jurors didn’t hear just how deep and long the conflict had been.
Robby Alkhalil’s older brother Nabil was convicted of stabbing a Duhre associate in May 2000 in Surrey’s Holly Park. He claimed at the time that he was only trying to protect his younger brothers.
One of those brothers, Khalil Alkhalil, just 19, was shot to death in Surrey in January 2001. His killer, Michael Naud, said the shooting was self-defence. A jury acquitted Naud, but he was later shot to death in suspected retaliation.
While on day parole in July 2002, Nabil was stopped by Vancouver police while driving a rented truck. Officers found a loaded .45-calibre handgun in the vehicle.
“Alkhalil told police that he thought his life was in danger,” according to parole documents obtained earlier by Postmedia. “He said he believes that the Duhre brothers have a contract on his head.”
“The Duhre brothers were involved in the incident that resulted in the death of one of (Nabil) Alkhalil’s brothers. Alkhalil retaliated at the time by beating up one of the Duhres. There has been bad blood since. The Duhre brothers are considered by police to be violent, as are Alkhalil and his brother Mahmoud,” the documents said.
A year later, Mahmoud Alkhalil, 19, died after a shooting at the Loft Six nightclub. Sandip Duhre was one of several notorious gangsters in the Vancouver club when the violence broke out.
Nabil was gunned down in Mexico in 2018, leaving Robby and Hisham, aka “Terry,” as the only surviving brothers.

WOMAN WAS WITH THREE NOTORIOUS GANGSTERS WHEN SHOT
KELOWNA - One of the women shot inside Jonathan Bacon's Porsche Cayenne two years ago is now suing the Delta Grand Hotel because it didn't "assure her safety" while she was on vacation with three high-profile B.C. gangsters.
Leah Hadden-Watts, 23, was left a paraplegic when she was shot by the same three men who opened fire with automatic weapons on Bacon's truck on Aug. 14, 2011—exactly two years ago.
In her suit, filed in Kelowna Supreme Court Aug. 14, 2013, she claims she was at increased risk by being at the casino because of a "predictable presence of criminality and gang members who regularly frequent casinos.”
In her statement of claim, Hadden-Watts says she was on vacation in and around the casino with her "acquaintances"—her friend Lyndsey Black, Independent Soldier James Riach, Hells Angel Larry Amero as well as Bacon, then the leader of the Red Scorpions.
"Unbeknownst to the plaintiff," her claim says. "One or more of her acquaintances were involved in gang related activities."
According to the CBC, Hadden-Watts is also the niece of a prominent B.C. member of the Hells Angels, Mike “Spike” Hadden. The group of five who were later shot were seen on Okanagan Lake in a powerboat named Steroids & Silicone, CBC said.
Hadden-Watts is suing the hotel, the casino and the alleged shooters. The plaintiffs are listed as the B.C. Investment Management Corporation, which runs the hotel, and Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Limited. It also names the three men due to face trial—Jujhar Singh Khun-Kuhn, Michael Kerry Jones and Jason Thomas McBride.
None of the claims have been proven in court. None of the defendants have filed a response. Calls to both the hotel and casino management have not been returned.
The claim says before the shooting, Hadden-Watts was taking courses to be an insurance broker and was taking courses to become a yoga instructor.
She was sitting in the rear middle seat of the Cayenne in the hotel parking lot roundabout when a second SUV pulled up beside and the men inside started shooting.
“One of the bullets fired from the second SUV struck the plaintiff in the neck severing the plaintiffs spinal column," the suit says. "As a direct result of being struck by the bullet the plaintiff has suffered nerve damage which caused paralysis of both the plaintiffs legs, most of her upper torso and partial paralysis of both arms and hands. The plaintiff also continues to suffer ongoing medical complications from being struck by the bullet.”
As a result, Hadden-Watts can’t keep a job and will need special medical attention for the rest of her life. She is looking for damages for pain and suffering, recovery of costs and expenses related to her injury, her future costs of care and the loss of present and future income.
She said Khun-Khun, Jones and McBride found out her "acquaintances" were staying at the hotel and went there "with one or more loaded firearms and a murderous intent."
She said the hotel was negligent because "fail(ed) to employ additional security personnel and failing to install security devices such as closed circuit TV cameras to protect Hotel guests and casino patrons from the increased risk arising from the attached operating casino."
The suit says the casino also failed to warn its guests of the increased risk of criminals being at the casino.
Hadden-Watts claims the alleged shooters were negligent in carelessly discharging one or more firearms in a public location.

As such, she has no functional capacity in her legs and only limited capacity in her upper extremities.
“Since the shooting, she has developed severe osteoporosis and experienced a spontaneous fracture of her lumbar spine.
