I'm moving and my new house can't get adsl so it's over to the dark side.
Is the shaw service and mail server uptime better than it used to be?

thanks for any comments.

Shaws still fighting with the remaining of Rogers devices, but their
new hardware for the most part seems to be working great. Their
backbone is very sweet, no caps like rogers had. Support can be very
busy at times, I think its due to the swap overs that their going
through. It appears to be about an area a week, When this happens, all
hell breaks loose on the phone lines as old rogers customers need to
be set up using DHCP. But I called the last few days in the am, and
got right though, ONE ring !
Email servers are still with the @Home backbone tho, so they suck.

Using your ISP's email server is such an insane thing to do anyways, no
matter if it is stable or not.. Get yourself an email address not connected
to your ISP, so if you feel like switching to ADSL on a whim, you don't have
to do stupid things like call up all your buddies and tell them what your
new email address is.

Well, mail taking days to arrive at times, servers being down and not
being able to access mail, all the servers are in California...
Shaw is going to build/host their own email servers, but it wont be
till later this year.

Since shaw took over rogers customers everythings a lot more stable, alot
faster and I have only noticed a few mails delayed. Uptime for the mail
servers has never been an issue that I've noticed in Surrey. I've been
using cable since October after 5 years with Internet Direct, and couldnt
be happier.

Been on rogers cable years ago and now switched to Shaw and the mail
servers seem to be fine , however , Shaw admits that I'm still on the rogers
backbone and it's really been crapping my speed down to a 56k modem baud
speed and it ain't pretty at all.Service from shaw really terrible , too
many delays been holding up on fighting to switch rogers member accounts to
shaw to get the actually high speed internet. This has been months already
and I dunno when Shaw will finish their problems yet.

I was getting terrible transfer rates on Sunday, as low as 3-8 kb a
second. ...quite frustrating (even on the "faster" servers). On
Friday, I believe, my service was cut for 12 hours (ie. no
connection). I haven't noticed much difference, otherwise. Where I
was getting 450+ kb /second, I'm only getting about 350kb, so it still
varies.

If Shaw will host their own email servers ... will they host the news
servers too?

To get better mail service ping mail in DOS.

Open the DOS window at the command prompt type ping mail don't use the IP #
use the name

mymail is > mail.lngly1.bc.wave.home.com

my news is> news1.rdc1.bc.wave.home.com

works like a charm my email comes in 5X as fast

Will they host an IRC server? Will Shaw ever do anything except make me think
my 14k4 dialup 6 years ago was faster than a goose though a canebreak?

I doubt all of the above, Shaw is slower than the 2nd coming, and getting
slower every day.

It seems much better....

Haven't had any down time in months....
But expect really long delays if you try to call customer support or the
billing office...

Knock on wood.....

I am using for 3 month so far so good
There was no down time, I noted only one problem with mail server after
midnight an nothing else. I think it was connected with improvement or
service etc.

How is newsgroup retention? How many groups?
Telus dial-up has been a real pain lately. Getting connected during peak hours
can be impossible, and there have been quite a few problems with authentication
(again). It looks like they have over-sold.
I'm looking for a good excuse to get rid of everything to do with Telus in the
house. Scum-sucking Rogers kept me from doing that in the past.
..,
Shel.
