Hey y’all,

A big thanks to our readers and community members who attended our teach-in on the life and work of Assata Shakur in Brooklyn.

So many of you came out on a cold, rainy evening to create such a warm and electrifying atmosphere. (We ran out of seats before the event began!)

A special shout-out to Lumumba Bandele, who kicked off the evening by offering libations to our ancestors. His meditation helped set the tone for a night that featured dream hampton sharing clips from her 2010 documentary The Black August Hip Hop Project. Monifa Bandele read passages from Assata Shakur’s autobiography, and dream emphasized the importance of Inadmissible Evidence: The Story of the African-American Trial Lawyer Who Defended the Black Liberation Army, the impactful memoir of Evelyn Williams, Assata’s aunt and defense attorney.

Other highlights from the evening include dream’s razor-sharp response to audience questions about hip-hop’s potential as a revolutionary cultural force: “Hip-hop is not a culture. A culture has food.” She added that you can’t build a movement with a carve-out for patriarchy or capitalism, unlike so much of hip-hop. The moment was a fantastic example of what constructive debate and disagreement can look like within our movements.

And we can’t forget the lessons exchanged and memories revisited. Monifa reflected on convincing a little-known artist named Biggie Smalls to perform for free at a fundraiser for political prisoners at the South Oxford Tennis Club in Fort Greene. She also discussed the organizing insight that led her to shift the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement from using rap concerts to create awareness around the plight of our comrades behind bars toward creating multilayered, individual strategies that have actually brought them home. It was a beautiful and moving evening — a gathering of minds and a testimony to Assata’s legacy, best captured by a quote from the final pages of her autobiography: “Any community seriously concerned with its own freedom has to be concerned about other peoples’ freedom as well. The victory of oppressed people anywhere in the world is a victory for Black people.”

In the spirit of rising to Assata’s call, Monifa Bandele is lifting up MXGM’s call for the Hammer & Hope community to support aging political prisoners, including these two elders:

Veronza Bowers Jr. was released from prison in 2024, after half a century of incarceration. He is 79 and continues to transition to life outside of prison. Please donate to him and stream his music.

Dhoruba Bin-Waha is a former political prisoner and Panther veteran who is now 81, struggling and healing his way through advanced lung cancer. Please support his health care needs with a donation.
