San Francisco, October 11 through 15th

Hi,
   I'll be visiting San Francisco and surrounds from the 11 October (for the Atlassian developer conference).

Would anyone be up for meeting to talk about Value Network Analysis? I've done some work to embed VNA into wiki platforms and would like to talk about this, or just to share stories about client needs, approaches, and fit with other methods.

I am pretty tied up the Mon-Weds, but will stay longer in the city if we can make something happen.

I won't be in SFO but I've also explored trying to embed our use of VNA into the Atlasssian's wiki....so we should skype some time to share experiences.

I won't be in SFO either but am interested in this thread. Please share what you can when you can. We are using Atlassian's wiki and that sounds like a nice extension that would be welcomed by many (or at least by one <smile>).

...just sharing my private response to Verna on the topic....

Hi Verna ... basically what I was trying to do was to implement a support environment for our partnership scorecard in confluence. The idea was that the "negotiations" around value flows would be conducted in the wiki. The Confluence administration functions can manage "role" based logons etc and to some extent manage the security of access by role. The difficulty I had mostly was with the more structured elements. We wanted to implement things like forms to bring up negotiated value flows by role and other functions to schedule the "sharing" of selective value flows after a brainstorming session amongst a single role (which is part of our partnership scorecard process). 

What I found was that doing the traditional forms/database stuff in confluence requires the use of third party macros...and I started to hit the limits of these pretty early. So we had to make a call on using a more conventional forms/DBMS approach and adding some wiki like features (but far inferior to confluence). In fact we are just going to allow joint editing of selected free text fields.

Thanks Laurie for sharing your experience with all of us. I am
intrigued with the fact that three members at least are exploring ways
to use the Atlassian Wiki application for knowledge capture around
value networks. We have also been investigating how collaboration
platforms and knowledge sharing applications can be best integrated
with the Value Network Insights application so that we can better
support how people want to work with the modeling. If we were to
development a "wish list" of functionality for value network analysis
- what would that be? So what I am pulling out of Laurie's experience
is the following functionality:

1) Shared discussion space to negotiate deliverables
2) A way to collaboratively edit text fields such as deliverables
3) view of negotiated value flows by role(s)

What else?

Thanks Laurence,

I agree, Confluence's structured data facilities is comparatively poor vs. other wikis. That was one reason that I built a WikiVNA project upon another wiki, Foswiki, which has better support for forms and other structured data.

I've had 2 clients on this Foswiki solution over the last 2 years. It does all the data gathering collaboratively on the web (no more excel, yay) and redraws and automatically lays out the basic diagrams in real time. It then provides a data extract (of an XLS) to upload into the VNA LLC analysis engine.

It works quite well - my issue has been getting a client with ambitious enough goals :)

Foswiki is nicely end-user programmable but suffers in other ways. The computer scientist in me would probably architect it differently now I have a conceptual design I'm happy with.

I certainly plan to meet up with Verna when I'm in San Fransisco. Yes, let's plan a Skype call, but not next week as I'm heads down on a proposal.
