If they have the song you want, you can play along with tabs or standard notation online, but I mostly download their Guitar Pro files if they are available for a song. GP is a stand alone program I have installed on my computer that I use for practicing. It splits the song into midi tracks, allows you to isolate tracks, change tempo, edit the song, as well as compose from scratch. One of my better purchases for software. -pro.com/

What is a good one stop source for accurate bass tabs? I would like to not have to have to miss a beat looking all over the net for tabs. And on a budget would be great. Where do you like to get bass tabs in a flash?

I like them too, unfortunately they only include tab and not notation. I have expressed my displeasure with the owner(s) and have been told they are working on it. Meanwhile, I have to manually convert the tab of the song I want to notation so I can play it.

As said before, we focus a lot of time on saying stuff on our instrument. We do so by becoming proficient in playing songs. If we however really want to unlock all the beauty that music has to offer, we should invest just as much time into listening. Listening and hearing what others have to say by developing our musical hearing.

Transcribing the greats like James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorius and Marcus MIller is a sure way to become better at your instrument. Throughout your bass playing career you will find many great basslines that you will adapt/make you own and add to your personal vocabulary.

A band only works if everyone works as a team. You should always strive to find a part that fits the arrangement well. As bass players we are looking to outline the harmony, but we also want to lock in with the drummer. We want to support singers/soloists and also add some nice creativity to our parts.

By transcribing songs you will learn what other players/arrangers have done to make the songs work. How do the kick drum and the bass line intertwine? Where are the spaces between the guitar and bass part? You will start asking yourself many questions like these. Especially when you are also writing your own songs/basslines.

There are many ways to get started, but the best way to start transcribing is to take an easy song you like. And although it might not seem obvious, first listen to the song without your bass in your hands. Take any section of the song that appeals to you and just try to sing along to what the bass player is doing.

Take a small segment at first. It can be two bars, one bar, or maybe just the first root note the bass plays. Really listen to it a few times and make sure you sing the right note. Once you are fairly certain you have it, try to find it on your bass. After that move on to the next section.

Note that the singing is a very important part to transcribing. By singing the part you internalize it and you will become better at reproducing the sound on your instrument. If you really know what the part must sound like, finding the part on your instrument is that much easier.

Joe Dart is a modern day bass phenom. His fingerstyle funk bass grooves are at the heart of the Vulfpeck sound and Dean Town is the MUST KNOW bass line of the modern era in much the same way that Teen Town has been a bass players rite of passage since the original Jaco Pastorius recording with Weather Report in 1977.

This is awesome! I have had to slow down the video sometimes to 75% and 50%, and I have been listening over and over again, lol! But not matter how long it takes I am going to learn it, and a little theory too. Thanks Mark and Talkingbass.net!

Ah! Thanks. As a relative novice, I was struggling to understand what key this was in. Everybody else seems to write four sharps, but E and C#m both make no sense at all. Writing three sharps immediately suggests F#m and explicitly raising the sixth to spell out dorian is much more logical.

IMPORTANT: Learning to play bass tabs and songs is only a small fraction of what learning to be a bass player is all about. If you haven't already, be sure to read my article on mistakes beginner bass players make in the bass basics section.

Bass tab shows the strings of the bass drawn horizontally. Most often bass tab is written for 4-string bass, but you may see it for 5-string and 6-string basses, too. That will depend on whether more strings are required to play the song.

In bass tab, notes are indicated by fret number. The fret number is written on the string on which it is played. Most basses have between 20 and 24 frets. You may see fret numbers from 0 (the open string) up to 24.

In this example you are to play the 3rd fret on the E-string followed by the 2nd fret on the A-string, then the 5th fret on the A-string, and finally the 5th fret on the D-string, then back down the same notes.

Many of the other markings found in bass tabs indicate the way notes are to be played. These are not standardized. You may see many variations. Often these markings are defined somewhere at the beginning of the bass tab. Some common bass tab markings you may encounter:

Another thing you will come across in bass tabs is alternate tunings. At the top of the tab it might specify to change the tuning of your bass for something non-standard (EADG). The tab may specify the exact tuning, like Db-Ab-Db-Gb, or use a common tuning name like "Drop D" (Which means DADG). It is always written from low-string to high-string.

Scales for bass guitar with diagrams and explanation.
What follows is a guide trough different scale categories for bass players. The fingerboard diagrams are based on standard tuning (EADG). See other tunings for 5-string bass below.

As long as you stick with the standard tuning (EADG), the scales for bass will be "same" as for the guitar. The shapes can, however, differ since four strings instead of six are involved. One-octave shapes will often be the same, but not two-octave shapes. The four-stringed bass are normally stringed as the for lowest (thickest) strings on the guitar.

See also The Bass Scale Collection eBook for graphical overviews of scales in all keys in different categories.

The scale categories covered so far are Major, Natural Minor, Melodic Minor, Harmonic Minor, Major Pentatonic, Minor Pentatonic and the modal scales. More categories will be included in coming updates.

Guitar Pro 8 gives you everything you need to edit and create your own TAB as well as download and playback/edit TAB for other songs. A nice advantage of this software is the range of tools you can use such as:

Looking at Bass TAB is like looking down at your bass in your hands. The bottom line in Bass TAB matches the lowest pitch string (eg: E for 4-string bass and B for 5-string bass in Standard Tuning) on your bass.

Depending on the style of music you play, you may never come across notes stacked in TAB, but the main point to remember is that when the numbers are stacked on top of each other, it means to play those notes at the same time.
