As most of you are probably aware, the Cities of Waynesboro and Staunton, and Augusta County, decided to pool their efforts and develop a new P25 Phase 2 digital radio system. The system probably won’t be fully operational until sometime in 2026, however on June 23rd, the new frequencies were licensed with the FCC under the call sign WSIU666. Last Thursday, I noticed a new station on the air on 453.5375, which appears to be transmitting from Sunset Park in Waynesboro. I have Uniden SD100 scanner , which monitors P25 Phase 2 simulcast systems. The radio has decoded the signal to show that it is part of the new SAW P25 system, showing a system ID as 30 and a site ID also as 30. I’ve heard no traffic yet on the system other than the control channel ID. The signal on 453.5375 is definitely coming from Sunset Park, but I haven’t checked the other sites listed on the FCC site to see if they are also transmitting the control signal.
This appears to be a well-designed simulcast system which should serve the first responders well in our community. As amateur radio operators , we support the work of our local first responders, as we are able. For those of us who are “radio nerdish”, watching a system like this being built out is fascinating. Even if you don’t own a radio that can decode P25, you can get an idea of coverage by listening to the data transmission on 453.5375.
