Who remembers the Uniden HR-2510

I was reminded of a little bit of ham history this morning. Technician class hams were given 10 meter phone privileges in early 1987.I was a general class ham then and had been licensed for about 10 years. My two cousins were amateurs, WD8LOX and N4ICV. In an effort to get their Dad (Atlee) into amateur radio they gave him a Uniden HR-2510. He got his ticket and became KA8VOY. Long story short after my uncle passed away in the mid 90's my cousins gave me his old 2510 which I still have. And it still works well. 

The 2510 is a 25 watt 10 meter rig. Covering CW, AM/FM and LSB/USB. As I recall it covered only 10m but it was easy to mod the radio to also cover Pretty obvious where that was going. At the time I was running the roads in tower construction and as much fun as 10 mobile was I realized a CB radio would be very useful on all the many interstates I found myself on. The mod was simple as I remember and it worked well on 26/27 mhz. I made the mistake of mentioning I had modified the radio in responding to a related QRZ post. I was amazed at being lambasted by a couple hams who basically said "how dare you open a case on a radio and make changes!!??" And to top it off I was using it on 11 meters! Blasphemy!

Forget the fact it was also marketed elsewhere as a 10/11 meter radio. Back in those days I had modified many cb's to 10 meters, many sideband rigs and the one that I had the most fun with was taking a Midland cb, putting it on 10 and then converting it further to FM! I had an absolute ball with that one. Those were fun days. Now of course every band from DC to light is included in one little box sitting in my Outback wagon  with more operating modes than I can use and even remember. And of course if you do manage to work up the courage to take the top of the case off you don't have any clue of what you're looking at. 

Now if I can only remember which button I push to turn it on..........

Yes, Wayne, I agree. Those were the real fun days when one could tinker and change. There were several mil srp units that could reach 6 meters with mod.

Back then I had my tech plus, but I had the Radio Shack HTX-100.  It also put out 25 watts, but I think it was only ssb and cw. I used it with a 4 element 10 meter yagi, and got my WAS with it.

Morning Wayne, it's always good to confess about the good the bad and the ugly as the excitement of learning something new pulls you into the dark side. I do remember the 2510 radio as well as it's counterparts in the President Series. The infamous Uniden 858 chip and the toggle switch truth table. Like you and many others reading this email (before becoming a ham) I cannot remember how many radio's I modified to do what they were not meant to do. I do hope the statute of limitations has been satisfied because my desire to do so no longer exists. What I still find fascinating is the amount of out of band activity that still exist. I leave my SDRPlay receiver on most of the time. During the last 10 meter opening I was very surprised to see a full water fall of activity from 27.450 to 28.000. No call signs just CB Handles and fake ID numbers. To some the adrenaline rush of being illegal is alive and well.

Opening the box was the issue instead of it being a non-certified transmitter? They missed an additional opportunity. :)

I had a 2510 in the 91/92 timeframe, when cycle 22 was at or near it's peak. Worked the world with it.

Those radios, in general, seem to be prohibited by FCC CFR however....

§ 95.935 Unauthorized use of non-CBRS transmitters.
The operator of a CBRS station must not use a non-CBRS transmitter to communicate with or attempt to communicate with stations in the CBRS.
(a) Non-CBRS transmitters. For the purposes of this section, “non-CBRS transmitters” are transmitters that are technically capable of operation in the 26-30 MHz frequency range, but are intended for use in the Amateur Radio Service (see part 97 of this chapter) or other government or non-government radio services, and are not certified for use in the CBRS.
(b) Unlicensed operation. The operation of non-CBRS transmitters on the CBRS channels is not authorized by § 95.305 of this part. Accordingly, the FCC considers any such operation to be a violation of section 301 of the Communications Act (47 U.S.C. 301).

Who knew, right? :)
