Please let me know if I missed anybody or if things have changed!!Again here is the information for the ride:
The ride will be Saturday August 1, 2026, it starts at 0800. We will gather at the Highland County Public School at 0700, or earlier if possible, that morning to be assigned tactical call signs and places in the ride.
Understand that places in the ride will change as the ride progresses due to breakdowns and other situations.
The ride will last until about 5-6pm. If you need to leave early, that is fine, just let us know Saturday morning and we can plan for it.
If you need to arrive late, that is fine as well, let us know now so that we can plan ahead. ANY amount of help you can provide for this is much appreciated.
Lodging is scarce in Highland and there may not be a place to stay available here. You can check locally, but you may need to look in Staunton, VA for a hotel.
Camping is available at the school Friday night before the ride for anyone interested in camping. The showers and bathrooms at the pool, next to the school, will be open for camper's use. I'll be there myself!!!
If you are not familiar with the Mtn Momma, it offers ride routes from 27, 53, 100 km (~62 miles), 67 and 100 miles, all at the same time, with overlapping routes, especially the 50, 100KM, 67 & 100 mile.
More details, GPS Data and Printable Maps for the rides are on the website:
http://highlandcountyrecreation.org/mountain-mama-road-bike-challenge.htmlI also have a few printed maps from previous years.
Most of the routes are in very rural areas on the fringe of the repeaters.
Equipment Need and Info:
MINIMUM Radio needed is:
25 watt or higher 2M mobile radio with an outside antenna for this ride. A handie Talkie will barely work outside of Monterey/ Bluegrass.
A Dual Band or 2 radios (146/ 446mhz) may also help. Again this year, we are using some Cross-banding for the real Fringe areas, as well as possibly a Simplex relay station if needed.
Frequency Info:
Again, I have attached an ICS-205 form that shows the frequencies and Special Instruction.
It was recommended that you print this out and have it with you for the ride day. If you have questions about the frequencies you need to program in, let me know.
Unless something happens, there WILL be an APRS system again this year!!! So make sure you have your APRS transmitter with you IF you have one.
REMEMBER there is LIMITED TO NO CELL PHONE SERVICE outside of the Monterey area.
Talk-in Friday evening and Saturday morning will be 147.180+ 100.0hz repeater. Tone should be OFF. Myself or Jerry will be monitoring.
If you have any specific questions about the ride please feel free to ask me.
One FINAL email will go out to ONLY those that have said YES or MAYBE 1 week before the ride with any last minute changes.
73 ES Thank you very much for helping us out in this local event. Please consider this and let me know if you will be able to help.
