Hi Neil,
I looked in the digitalradio Yahoo Group and I see that there is
actually a PSK31 program that can be used with some Cellphones <g>
I never knew about that before. Here is a link I found:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/digitalradio/message/45061
----------------------------------------
There is a PSK31 app for Android phones. However you need a receiver in
addition to use it. All explained on this link:
http://www.butterscotch.com/preview/1213397/DroidPSK-PSK31

Searched "PSK31 for smartphones" and there were quite a few results
returned. One link was for SSTV, PSK31 and RTTY using a smartphone, the
YouTube video is in German: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIzmbgwqAvo

I believe there was an article a year or so in QST using a Android
smartphone for PSK31. I am not a member of ARRL so could not search
their articles on www.arrl.org

Good luck,

Jerry/K0HZI

Hi Neil, no, the cellphone was designed to be an integral part of a Cell
phone network with companies offering *proprietary* transceiver
connected service - unlike Ham Radio :-)

Here is a list of very inexpensive SDR starter radio's that you might
want to try, if you are pleased with the "QSD" Architecture:

Thanks!  David, others, I’m Smart Phone dumb here.

Do these methods only provide audio interface to ham equipment or also transmit from “smart” phones on ham frequencies?

If audio interface only, why bother? Other than “we can do it”.  Well, maybe those with smart phones but no PSK31, etc, interfaces on ham gear are still good to go.

      Thanks

      Jess

Yes, Wow, that is some list! That is great. I didn't see the Peaberry v2 Transceiver kit on there.

      http://ae9rb.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=8

I think this one is especially attractive as the 24 bit, 96 KHz audio in/out I/Q interface is built in eliminating the notoriously questionable quality of sound-cards in addition to the noise introduced from their cabling.

It is an inexpensive kit, for a transceiver, and about the only downside for some is that it uses surface mount components. The build instructions look concise and complete. From the support forum it seems that few builders run into trouble.

I purchased the kit but am stuck waiting until my hand is usable again after a recent surgery!! Since everything about this project is open source, including the firmware, and it uses standard, generic drivers for USB sound interface, Si570 freq synth,... it appeared to be a slam dunk for my desire of a qrp sdr transceiver kit that I could hack into the rig I desire over time. It covers four bands of my choosing at build time but I already know how I may expand that to cover all bands from 160M to 10M.

It would be nice if any other sdr starter radios that didn't make the list could be brought to everyone's attention so they could be added. Likely you have 99.9% of them, from all appearances. Thanks again for the great list and for sharing it. Collecting sdr radios could become addictive :-)
