A friend from church who is a ham, and has been off the air for a while, recently moved to Summit Square in Waynesboro and would like try to get back on the air. He is needing some antenna advice as he has someone there who is willing to put it up on the roof of his building but he needs some guidance and is looking for someone who could advise him. If anyone can help him out, I know he would appreciate it. Just get in touch with me for his contact info and thanks.

Bidh sìth Dhè maille ribh,

Bill I’m available to advise and willing to help as much as I’m physically able. My physical abilities are not what they once were but I’ll do what I can.

As a younger ham - about 50 years ago - I had occasion to put an 80 meter dipole on a flat roof of a large building.

I learned that although the building was quite tall - putting a dipole on 10 foot poles above that flat roof was worse than putting the same dipole 10 feet above the ground.  IT DID NOT WORK!

We ended up putting the dipole at the edge of the roof along the outside wall.  It worked better closer to the edge of the roof but it was still not a very good antenna.

Just a word of caution form an old ham who has "been there - done that".

p.s. a flat roof is built on top of Q Decking.  The deck material is metal.  Mounting a multi-band vertical would be better than any horizontal wire antenna - esp. if you could use the metal deck as a counterpoise in place of radials.

I live fairly close to Summit Square (+/- 1 mile) and am willing to assist with the installation of the antenna.  I also have a good relationship with the maintenance staff there.

Please let me know when this will happen,

My thanks for all the responses and willingness to help get Pret back on the air. I know he’ll got the help he needs and we will soon hear him on the airwaves again,
