Hello to all,

I wish to thank all of you who participated in the VOAD EXPO ARES demonstration at the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank in Verona, Virginia.  All went well and thanks to all of you who participated, we had plenty on contacts on HF, VHF, UHF and Packet.  The turnout for the event was not as great as expected by the VOAD officials but the turnout for the ARES demonstration was excellent.  I also performed as the NCS for the Virginia Sideband Net at 6 pm and had more than the usual checkins and participation.  The only drawback was the thunderstorm that passed through as David and I were setting up the antennae and equipment before.  The QRN (static) level was very high during our operating time 0f 5 pm to after 7:30 pm which made it very difficult to copy a large part of the participants on HF.  Contacts were all over the state and one in North Carolina.  The VHF/UHF contacts were very good and consistent.  We also had contact with Section Emergency Coordinator, Ed Krom, WD4KHP of Berryville, Virginia.

I want to add that you have very dedicated ECs in David Tanks, Augusta County EC and in Steve Presti, W4SVP, Rockbridge County EC who participated in the demo.  David, I must add, has an excellent emergency setup for erecting antennae in a short time and by one person.  Steve Presti participated at the Stonewall Jackson/Carilion Hospital ARES/Races station in Lexington, Virginia.  I did not have Rockingham Memorial Hospital participate as they are unprepared at this time due to a lack of antennae.  I hope to have this resolved very soon.

Again, thank you all and I appreciate all that was done.

73,

Ellsworth Neff
