Cindy and I have a son, Ben, age 18, who happens to have Down syndrome. (Our 3 older children are severely normal.)
We thought September 25, 1991, was the worst day in our lives… when Cindy received a phone call from the OB/GYN and was told that the amniocentesis results showed that our un-born baby had Down syndrome. She called me at work (I was working in PACE at the time), and I’ll never forget her crying and crying, and nearly unable to tell me the news. I raced home, and our journey began.
It turns out that Ben is a real character… he’s a junior in high school now, has penmanship like a doctor.
I would take away the Down syndrome from Ben if I could, but I would not trade places with anyone because the experience has been awesome for him and us. It is not always easy, but I trust that God knows what He’s doing in our life… and in your life, too.
Thanks for taking the time to read this email… I know we’re all busy these days.
