All stone inscriptions would be imprinted and published in print under the five-year long special plan at a cost of 3.5 crore, finance, electricity and human resources minister Thangam Thennarasu told the assembly on Wednesday.
Of 26,000 stone inscriptions available, more than 50% in Tamil
10,197 have already been imprinted and published in 67 volumes
“In the last three years, 2,877 inscriptions were published in 15 volumes,” he said.
Every year, ₹5crore was allocated for archaeological excavation. For this year sites have been identified in Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore and Pudukottai among other places. Tirumalai Nayakar Mahal in Madurai, Maratha palace in Thanjavur and the Danish Fort in Tarangambadi are being renovated at ₹15crore and 12 Tamil Brahmi stone inscriptions have been declared protected assets. When VCK’s M Sinthanai Selvan pointed out that erstwhile buddha vihars and Jain temples don’t get as much attention as Hindu temples, the minister said those that are that are still worshipped are not disturbed.tnn
