Summary of the talk
Being always an impartial historian, JBP.More is a keen observer of the past, present and future of the world and the human beings who live in it. In this talk JBP.More will delve into the rise of western civilization and culture since the sixteenth century. He traces its historical evolution from feudalism to capitalism and to the current globalization.This civilization has now spread its wings around the world including India in various forms and ways. This has led to clash of civilisations and innumerable conflicts, confusions and destruction since the past few centuries in which millions have died and are still dying. JBP. More will delve into all these problems of modern civilisation with his usual analytical clarity and precision in the course of this talk.
About the Speaker
J. B. P. More, also known as JB.Prashant More is a scholar of international repute, specialising on south Indian history as well as the colonial history of India. He had obtained his PhD in history from the prestigious Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris. Currently he teaches at Institut des Hautes Etudes Economiques et Commerciales (Inseec), Paris. He has published extensively on the history of Tamilnadu and Kerala, and also on French colonial history in India. Some of his books for which he is known are ‘The Political Evolution of the Muslims in Tamilnadu and Madras, 1930-47’, ‘Muslim Identity, Print Culture and the Dravidian factor in Tamilnadu’ as well as ‘The Origin and Early History of the Muslims of Keralam’. His other important books are ‘Religion and Society in South India’ and the ‘Rise and Fall of the Dravidian Justice party, 1916-1946’. His recent book entitled ‘Origin and Foundation of Madras’ has established that Madras is indeed a Tamil word. His works on freedom movement in the French colonies of Mahé and Yanam has been acclaimed as quite original and unique. His recent books are entitled ‘From Arikamedu to the Foundation of modern Pondicherry’, and ‘Tamil Heroes of French India’. He has authored more than 18 books and 40 articles in English, French and Tamil.
About Prof. M. Anandakrishnan
Prof. Anandakrishnan obtained Ph.D in Civil Engineering (1960) from the University of Minnesota, USA. He served as Professor of Civil Engineering at IIT, Kanpur between 1963 and 1974. He served the United Nations in the UN Centre for S&T for Development(1978-1989); as the Vice-Chancellor of Anna University (1990-96); and as Vice-Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education from 1996-2002. Currently he is the Chairman, Board of Governors, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and Rajasthan; President, Ranganathan Centre for Information Studies (RCIS), Chennai; President, Tamil Nadu Academy of Sciences, Chennai; Member, Board of Management, NUEPA, Delhi; Member, High Power Committee on Renovation and Rejuvenation of Higher Education in India and Chairman, Executive Council, Science City, Chennai. He was Chairman, MIDS between 2003 and 2008. He has served as Chairman or Member of several high level committees of MHRD, UGC, AICTE and NAAC. His honours and awards include Padma Shri from the President of India (2002); the Order of Scientific Merit from the President of Brazil (1996); Distinguished Leadership Award of the University of Minnesota (2003); Honorary Fellow of the Indian Society for Technical Education (2005); UGC National Swami Pranavananda Saraswati Award in Education (2006); Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, India and Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India.
