தாலப்பொலி - கேரளாவில் கன்னியரும், சுமங்கலிகளும்
விளக்கும், தென்னம்பூவும் தட்டில் ஏந்தி அளிக்கும் வரவேற்பு.
திருக்கோவில்கள் திருவிழாக்கோலம் பூணும்போது
தாலப்பொலியும், யானைகளின் அலங்காரமும், அணிவகுப்பும்,
செண்டை வாத்தியமும் சேரர்களின் மண்ணின் மணம் வீசி
மக்கள் மனதைக் கொள்ளையிடும் காட்சி.

2000 ஆண்டுக்கு முன்னர் தாழ்- என்றால் திராவிட பாஷைகளில்
palm species பொதுப்பெயர். தாழ்/தாழை என்றால் தென்னை,
பனை முதலியவற்றுக்கும் பேர். சங்க இலக்கியத்தில் இருந்தும்
toddy என்ற சொல்லாய்வினாலும் இதைக் காட்டியுள்ளேன்.
தாடிக்கொம்பு சிறந்த நாயக்கர் காலச் சிற்பங்கள் கொண்ட
கோவில் உள்ள ஊர். தாடிக்கொம்பில் உள்ள தாடி
பனை மரத்தைக் குறிப்பது (toddy என்ற ஆங்கிலச்
சொல்லுக்க்கும் தாடி < தாழ்- ‘பனை’) என்பதே மூலச்சொல்.

மலையாள அறிஞர் ராதாகிருஷ்ண வாரியர் என் நீண்டகால
நண்பர். அவருக்குக் தாலம் என்ற சொல் திராவிட வேர்ச்சொல்
தாழ்- என்பதன் மருவு என்பதும், தாலி, தாலம், தாலப்பொலி
என்பதெல்லாம் பிற்காலப் பிராகிருதமாக்கலின் விளைவு
என்றும் செந்தமிழ் (CTamil, University of Paris) லிஸ்ட்டில்
எழுதினேன்.

Acc. to Tamil scholars, tAlappoli does not have the word for
'plate' in it. tAlappoli is named because the girls and ladies
hold the "ten2n2ampuu" and "ten2n2aGkuruttu"
along with a lamp. Because of the flowers of the
coconut palms help by young girls signifying
auspiciousness, it is called tAappoli. Palmyrah palms,
being the Chera symbol, earlier centuries might have
included palmyra flowers and shoots as well.

"tAz" is a generic term in Tamil for the species of palms (palymyrah palms,
coconut palms, pandanus palms, date palms, ...), probably
because the leaves of these 'tAz' bushes are hanging down.
In the palmyrah trees, they are pruned by farmers. In Telugu etc.,
tAz- becomes tADi & English word, "toddy" (=palm wine) comes
from this Dravidian tAz/tADi-. PuRanAnURu 17: 'kulai iRaGkiya
kOL tAzai' (Here, tAzai is coconut tree). tADaGgam is the plalm-leaf ear ring
shown in Chozha bronzes on Parvati, Nataraja (on the left side
to signify his spouse), Ardhanari.  In regions north of Tamizakam,
tAz changes to tAla, much like Choza  transforming to Chola.
In Sri Lanka, the anciemt Tamil name for palms, tAz-
in place-names, is changed to taala- in Sinhala language:

Either from Ceylon or from North, Tamils got the word, tAla
again in later centuries. tAza gets reborrowed into Tamil as tAla
from Prakrits. There is a beautiful prabandham
called "tAla vilAsam" detailing benefits from palm trees.
tAli, the mangalya suutra contains tAla tree leaf.

poli is a common word. For example, when goats are
sacrificed at the Amman temples in villages, the paNDaaram
priests tell, "poli, poli". 'poli pODutal' is the name of
the ritual. 'poli koDuttal' or 'pali koDuttal' is the Sanskrit
word, bali's origin. In Telugu, for example, palli 'wall lizard'
is called 'balli', poTTu 'tilaka' is 'boTTu' in Telugu. After 'poli' (=Skt. bali),
the victim's blood becomes "tilaka" both for the stone idol inside the temple,
and also the devotees present. poTTu ( < pOTu- (verb) 'to cut, to
hit', poTTu from (poli)pOTu), and tilaka (tila/eLLu is sesame
connected with death) have same origin, and connected with Muruku, which is
an aNaGku in Sangam Tamil, worship by Velan-s then.
