(7th Century Kappe Arabhatta Inscription,Badami)
Kappe Arabhatta was a Chalukya warrior of the 8th century who is known from a Kannada verse inscription, dated to 700 CE, and carved on a cliff overlooking the northeast end of the artificial lake in Badami, Karnataka, India.
This is 1,300 years old Kannada Inscription.
The language of the inscription is ಹಳೆಗನ್ನಡ; The first verse is in Sanskrit. The rest is in Tripathi.

ಕಪ್ಪೆ ಅರಭಟ್ಟನ್ ಶಿಷ್ಟಜನಪ್ರಿಯನ್
ಕಷ್ಟಜನವರ್ಜಿತನ್ ಕಲಿಯುಗ ವಿಪರೀತನ್
ವರನ್ತೇಜಸ್ವಿನೋಮೃತ್ಯುರ್ನತುಮಾನಾವಖಂಡನಂ
ಮೃತ್ಯುಸ್ತತ್ಕ್ಷಣಿಕೋ ದುಃಖಮ್ಮಾನಭಂಗಂ ದಿನೇದಿನೇ
ಸಾಧುಗೆ ಸಾಧು ಮಾಧುರ್ಯನ್ಗೆ ಮಾಧುರ್ಯ್ಯಂ ಬಾಧಿಪ್ಪ
ಕಲಿಗೆ ಕಲಿಯುಗವಿಪರೀತನ್ಮಾಧವನೀತನ್ ಪೆರನಲ್ಲ
ಒಳ್ಳಿತ್ತ ಕೆಯ್ವಾರಾರ್ಪೊಲ್ಲದುಮದರಂತೆ ಬಲ್ಲಿತ್ತು ಕಲಿಗೆ
ವಿಪರೀತಾಪುರಾಕೃತಮಿಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂದಿಕ್ಕುಮದು ಬನ್ದು
ಕಟ್ಟಿದ ಸಿಂಘಮನ್ಕೆಟ್ಟೊದೆನೆಮಗೆನ್ದು ಬಿಟ್ಟವೋಲ್ಕಕಲಿಗೆವಿ
ಪರೀತಂಗಹಿತರ್ಕ್ಕಳ್ಕೆಟ್ಟರ್ಮ್ಮೇಣ್ಸತ್ತರವಿಚಾರಂ
ಶಾಸನದ ಭಾವಾರ್ಥ :
- ಈ ಕಪ್ಪೆ ಅರಭಟ್ಟ ಎಂಬುವನು ತನ್ನನ್ನು ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸಿದ ಎಲ್ಲ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಜನರ ಪ್ರೀತಿಪಾತ್ರನು; ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವ ತನಗೆ ಆಗದ ಜನರನ್ನು ಕೊನೆಗಾಣಿಸುವ, ಕಲಿಯುಗಕ್ಕೇ ವಿಪರೀತನೆನಿಸುವಷ್ಟು ಧೀರನು, ಇವನು!
- ತೇಜಸ್ವಿಗಳಾದವರಿಗೆ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಾದುದು ಯಾವುದು? (ವೀರ)ಮರಣವೇ ಹೊರತು ಮಾನಭಂಗವಲ್ಲ ; ಏಕೆಂದರೆ, ಮೃತ್ಯು ತತ್ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಕ್ಷಣಿಕವಾದ ದುಃಖವನ್ನು ತಂದೊಡ್ಡಬಹುದು, ಆದರೆ, ಮಾನಭಂಗ? ಅದು ಅನುದಿನವೂ ದುಃಖವನ್ನು ತರುತ್ತಲೇ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ!
- ಇವನು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವರಿಗೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವನು, ಸಾಧುವಾದ ಮನುಷ್ಯ; ಮಧುರವಾದ ನಡತೆಯುಳ್ಳ ಸದಾಚಾರದವನಿಗೆ ಮಾಧುರ್ಯದ ಮನುಷ್ಯ; ಬಾಧಿಸುವ ಕಲಿಗೆ (ಅಂದರೆ, ಶೂರನಿಗೆ) ಇವನು ವಿಪರೀತನಾದ ಕಲಿಯುಗ. ಇವನು ವಿಷ್ಣುವೇ ಹೊರತು ಬೇರೆಯಲ್ಲ .
- ‘ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವವರಿಗೂ ಕೆಡಕನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವವರಿಗೂ ಅವರವರಿಗೆ ಇವನು ಅದನ್ನೇ ಇನ್ನೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇವನು ಕಲಿಗೆ ವಿಪರೀತನು. ಹಿಂದಿನ ಜನ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನರು ಏನು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರೋ ಅವರವರ ಕರ್ಮಾನುಸಾರ ಆ ಫಲವನ್ನು ಅವರು ಇವನಿಂದ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.
- ಕಟ್ಟಿದ ಸಿಂಹವನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಏನು ಕೆಟ್ಟುಹೋಯ್ತು- ಎಂದು ಅದನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟಂತೆ ಈಗ ಆಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಸಿಂಹಸ್ವರೂಪನಾದ, ಕಲಿಗೆ ವಿಪರೀತನಾಗಿರುವ ಇವನ ಕೈಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕು ಶತ್ರುಗಳು ಕೆಟ್ಟರು ಅಥವಾ ಸತ್ತರು. ಇದು ಅವರವರ ಅವಿಚಾರದ ಫಲ.

Śāsanada bhāvārtha: Ī kappe arabhaṭṭa embuvanu tannannu āśrayisida ella oḷḷeya janara prītipātranu; keṭṭa kelasa māḍuva tanage āgada janarannu konegāṇisuva, kaliyugakkē viparītanenisuvaṣṭu dhīranu, ivanu! Tējasvigaḷādavarige śrēṣṭhavādudu yāvudu? (Vīra)maraṇavē horatu mānabhaṅgavalla; ēkendare, mr̥tyu tatkālakke kṣaṇikavāda duḥkhavannu tandoḍḍabahudu, ādare, mānabhaṅga? Adu anudinavū duḥkhavannu taruttalē iruttade! Ivanu oḷḷeyavarige oḷḷeyavanu, sādhuvāda manuṣya; madhuravāda naḍateyuḷḷa sadācāradavanige mādhuryada manuṣya; bādhisuva kalige (andare, śūranige) ivanu viparītanāda kaliyuga. Ivanu viṣṇuvē horatu bēreyalla. ‘Oḷḷeyadannu māḍuvavarigū keḍakannu māḍuvavarigū avaravarige ivanu adannē innū heccāgi māḍuttāne. Ivanu kalige viparītanu. Hindina janmadalli janaru ēnu māḍiddarō avaravara karmānusāra ā phalavannu avaru ivaninda paḍeyuttāre. Kaṭṭida sinhavannu biṭṭare ēnu keṭṭuhōytu- endu adannu biṭṭante īga āgide. Ī sinhasvarūpanāda, kalige viparītanāgiruva ivana kaige sikku śatrugaḷu keṭṭaru athavā sattaru. Idu avaravara avicārada phala.
Purport of Statute:
This frog, Arabhatta, was beloved by all the good people who took refuge in him; He is brave enough to kill people who do bad things, who are not worthy of him.
What is great for the brilliant? (Heroic) death, not dishonour; Because, death may bring momentary sorrow, but, depravity? It continues to bring misery every day!
He is good to the good, a virtuous man; A man of sweetness to a righteous man of sweet conduct; For the afflicted Kali (ie, the brave) this is the extreme Kaliyuga. He is none other than Vishnu.
He will do the same to those who do good and to those who do evil. He is very learned. Whatever people have done in their previous life, according to their karma, they will get that fruit from this one.
Now it is like leaving the tied lion. Enemies are killed or killed in the hands of this lion-shaped, extreme-killer. This is the result of their impiety.
