Plastic debris is pervasive and persistent in all the oceans of the world. It does not biodegrade and it comes from a variety of sources. Cruise ships generate a variety of pollution including huge amounts of solid waste and, depending on location, discharge it directly into the water. Marine transport, commercial fishing, and recreational boating are also sources. But surprisingly the National Marine Debris Monitoring Program study by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) concluded that, for U.S. beaches, trash is more likely to come from land-based sources, 49 percent of total debris, than from ocean-based sources, 18 percent. Land or ocean sources could not be differentiated for 33 percent of the debris.


Hong Kong does not seem to have similar data, but the WWF is working to fill that gap. Land-based debris comes primarily from litter washed into storm drains and streams and then carried to the ocean during heavy rains. Here in HK I occasionally see litter plumes in the ocean meandering past my flat near Sandy Bay and wonder if goof-ups at the solid waste transfer facility wharf a couple kilometers (1.2 miles) up the coast near Kennedy Town could also be a source.




Unfortunately, even when sewage is treated before discharge into rivers or the ocean, problems can still arise. Pharmaceuticals in nature are being found in more and more bodies of water. The source for part of that is runoff from livestock operations where high doses of antibiotics and hormones are commonly used. But treated municipal wastewater is also suspected as a culprit because municipal treatment in most, if not all countries, does not remove pharmaceuticals. The main source of drugs entering domestic wastewater is believed to be unmetabolized medications passing through humans.


The Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division provides ocean safety service for the island of Oʻahu, which features 227 miles of coastline. This service includes ocean rescue, prevention, emergency medical first response, dispatched mobile patrol, education, outreach, and injury prevention programs, all related to ocean safety.


The Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division is the primary responder for emergencies on the beaches and in the near shore waters for the island of Oʻahu. Near shore waters extend from the shore line to one (1) mile off shore, and this zone from the beach to one mile off shore is where the vast majority of ocean recreation activities take place. The Ocean Safety Division features five operational districts:


Each of Ocean Safety's five operational districts is staffed by a Captain, five Lieutenants and between 21 and 85 Ocean Safety Officers, or Lifeguards. Each operational district uses both tower and mobile units to provide ocean safety service. Mobile units feature either a truck and ski, or truck only, and one or two Lifeguards and are on patrol. The division's operational hours for towers and mobile units is 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tower-based service provides constant vigilance, shoreline and ocean prevention service, emergency medical first response, and ocean rescue at specific beach locations. Mobile units, some which are equipped with personal watercraft, are used to provide strategic periodic vigilance, shoreline and ocean prevention service (ocean prevention services are extended off shore by use of rescue craft), observed and dispatched emergency medical first response both on the shoreline, and in the waters and observed, and dispatched ocean rescue service (through 911 calls).


Last year, I spoke at Casual Connect in Tel Aviv about Blue Ocean Strategy in the game space (see presentation below) and multiple people commented to me how this approach was great but too risky. The belief is that while overall Blue Ocean strategy would be the best approach, it was too risky from a career perspective to pursue. What they missed, and what I obviously failed to convey during the presentation, is that it is actually less risky to pursue a Blue Ocean strategy than a traditional strategy.


The core of Blue Ocean Strategy is that rather than trying to win against entrenched competitors you find and target uncontested market space where the competition is irrelevant. Red oceans are a known market space with many competitors where you fight for market share. In red oceans, it is all about beat the competition and exploiting existing demand. Blue oceans is an unknown market with few competitors where you are creating market share.


The reason many people feel that red oceans are less risky is the fact that you are competing in a known rather than unknown market space. The unknown is always scary, be it going into space or a haunted house. In many ways, it is scarier in business where people must make their own decisions rather than basing decisions on what somebody else has done successfully. People thus transfer this fear of the unknown to Blue Ocean being a riskier strategy.


Some might argue these statistics are a long term play and in the short term it is still riskier to try something new than just tried to beat your competitors on the battlefield. The long term results play out over time but a Blue Ocean strategy creates the opportunity for a quick debacle, if you launch a completely new approach and it shows no traction.


Again, the reality does not justify the fears. It is not that a Blue Ocean strategy has no risks, since it is a new approach there may not be a market for it, but Red Ocean strategies are also incredibly risky. Competitors are smart and always improving. Copying their strategies will always leave you behind them and the gap between you and your competitors is likely to widen.


The bottom line is that business is risky. Yes, Blue Ocean strategy may fail and you can lose your job. Red Ocean strategy, however, also can fail and leave you in an equally precarious situation. Given the evidence that Blue Ocean strategy yields superior results to Red Ocean and results drive your personal professional success, Blue Ocean is actually the less risky strategy to pursue.


Unfortunately, the great majority of game developers and small-to-medium sized publishers rely upon outside investment to finance new projects. Those investors respond MUCH better to pitches involving past success stories, compared what they inevitably consider pie-in-the-sky dreams.


Therefore, the organizations with the resources to pursue such strategies are limited to those with significant cash reserves from past successes. Only firms with insanely mature and experienced management have the bravery and vision to undertake Blue Ocean thinking. Most successes, especially in the tech space, not to mention game space, double-down on what they believe they know and understand. Zynga is a great example. I would argue the immaturity and inexperience of the top few management levels almost inevitably doomed the company, not to mention an over-abundance of hubris.

The ocean is a source of healing, sustenance and recreation, supporting both the physical and mental health of our community. The devastating fires, however, have untold impacts to our nearshore waters along West Maui and South Maui, and East Lānaʻi.


Despite these efforts, vegetation in both Lāhainā and Kula that would typically absorb rainfall has been burned away. The lack of vegetation in these areas increases the possibility of mudslides and flash flooding, both of which could be contaminated with toxins. This is a concern not only in the coastal areas adjacent to Lāhainā, but also Kīhei where the lack of stabilizing vegetation in Upcountry gulches could further exacerbate flooding and toxic pollution downslope. At this time, private property owners and community groups are seeking ways to quickly replant and stabilize the affected gulches.


Even with erosion control and pollution prevention measures, there are still many unknowns related to the toxicity and safety of the ocean water to both humans and the environment - particularly around Lāhainā town. As noted above, the initial fire blew toxic ash over the water, which was then dispersed throughout the ʻAuʻau Channel that separates the islands of Maui and Lānaʻi. Additional winds in the days and weeks that followed also likely led to pollutants entering the ocean.
