basic question - cannot add a box

Hi, I just started using vagrant and tried to download a box using command:

vagrant box add --name concourse/lite https://atlas.hashicorp.com/concourse/boxes/lite/versions/2.4.0/virtualbox.box --provider virtualbox    

and I get error:

==> box: Box file was not detected as metadata. Adding it directly...

==> box: Adding box 'concourse/lite' (v0) for provider: virtualbox

    box: Downloading: https://atlas.hashicorp.com/concourse/boxes/lite

An error occurred while downloading the remote file. The error

message, if any, is reproduced below. Please fix this error and try

again.

I tried changing the URL to:

https://atlas.hashicorp.com/concourse/boxes/lite/versions/2.4.0/    and 

https://atlas.hashicorp.com/concourse/boxes/lite/

but I get the same error. I tried downloading other boxes but I get the same error. I cannot download any box files from vagrantup.com either. Do I need an account?

I am using vagrant v1.8.7 on OSX.
