Hi

I have been trying to get Laravel homestead to work with Vagrant + VirtualBox on Windows 10. It is not going well. I have been through many guides and bug posts of others having similar problems and tried many combinations of versions and fixes but I have had 0 luck and ran into several separate issues. I am ready to spend some money to make this all go away and let me run Homestead.

I have always been a VirtualBox user and have no experience or knowledge about VMWare, but I would like to try it in the hopes it won't have these issues.

So here are my questions:

1) Has anyone successfully gotten Homestead to work with VMWare + Vagrant recently on Windows 10?
2) What do I need to buy here to try this? Here: https://www.vagrantup.com/vmware/index.html#buy-now it asks for $79, and here: http://store.vmware.com/store/vmware/en_US/DisplayProductDetailsPage/ThemeID.2485600/productID.323700100?src=WWW_eBIZ_productpage_Workstation_Buy_US it asks for $249. Do I need to buy both of these products? It looks like the answer yes, the first one is the plugin and the second is VMWare it's self, but I wanted to check this before spending over $300.
3) Is there a free version of VMWare I can use instead? I had understood there was but the only thing I can find is the paid version with the free trial.

I am sorry since this is likely a simple newbie question.

Any advice anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. It is getting a bit old to be beating my head against something as simple as installing a Virtual Machine.

Thanks very much in advance.

Will

Hello Vagrant core is the open source program.

It works fine for boxes, and the overall user experience is quite easy.

Hashicorp only provides the boxes under hashicorp organization in atlas, so in this case the box you are having issues is not a hashicorp box.

having said that, one option is to contact the people that has build the box/project you are using as they could assist better.

To answer your question, yes you need both products plugin + workstation. I think you can download workstation as 30 day trial, and the plugin have a 30 day refund period, so you can evaluate and get a refund.

Depending on the box/boxes you want to use, not all of them are in vmware version, so please check if the box you want use exists on VMWare.

On top of all of this, what about you building your own box?
