Are you sure about Jacob's death date?  On Ancestry.com, he is still living on the 1870 U.S. Federal Census Non-Population Schedule.  Do you have the 1850 and 1860 Census records for Augusta Co.?

It would help to know what sources you have already checked so we won't duplicate your searches.

I am positive about the dates.  I personally read his tombstone about 20 years ago, and the dates were very legible.  The Jacob you see on the Census is his son by his third wife, Catherine Sanger, who he wed in 1839.  The "Jr". designation was not used.  He was just called "Jake".  He was born in 1841, and he had a brother named Sam, born in 1843.  They are buried in Laurel Hill Church Cemetery.  I have all the Census records for Augusta, and the records for Jake and Sam.

Whoever replied to my post, would you please identify yourself ?  My e-mail is ELCri...@aol.com.

Thanks,
Ed

Brenda, after researching this man for about 20 years, I feel that I have exhausted most sources in Augusta County, with most of my research done in the Courthouse in Staunton (my home- I now live in Richmond).  I have circumstantially proven, mainly with land and tax records that he was the son of Lewis and Mary Croft, who migrated up the Shenandoah Valley, I believe from PA.  I don't feel that Jacob was born in Augusta County. Judging from the time of his birth, 1793, I believe he was born in one of the Northern valley counties: Frederick, Clarke, Hampshire, Morgan, Berkely, Jefferson (last 4 now WVA).  Or maybe Washington or  Frederick Co. MD.  The most likely county in PA would be Franklin.  I have also exhausted the records of John Humphrey, a personal friend who did the PA Births series.  I don't believe he did Franklin Co. before his untimely death.
