I am searching for the parents of David Parish, born about 1791 or 1792 in Virginia.  I do not know when he left Virginia.

Hi Molly,

(Are you married to a Hoke or a Hoke by birth?  My great grandmother was Bessie Dale Hoke, daughter of Bessie Fern Redden and Henry Hoke of WVa.  Would be interested to see if you're of that family...it's not a very common lineage around these parts).

As for David Parish, I might be able to help you some, although not with an exact name of his parents, I am afraid.  I believe he was born in Goochland County, Virginia, however, so that might help you narrow your search.  His middle initial was "M."  There are records to show that he died in Nachodoches, Texas, suggesting that he did indeed leave Virginia.  The 1860 census shows that on Jun 15, 1860 he was residing at Beat 1A, Nachodoches, Texas.  I have attached a copy of that census record.

I'm also attaching a copy of the 1810 Goochland census, the 1820 Goochland census, the 1830 Goochland census, and the 1840 Goochland census.  So however he ended up in Texas, it wasn't until the end of his life, suggesting that his parents can probably be found around Goochland if the records exist.  Parish was often misspelled "Parsch" so I'd try looking for records under that name, as well.

Best,
Susan

Thank you so much for your reply.  I've known about this Parish man for a long time and some people think they're the same.  However I'm not convinced as their birth dates differ. I disagree with most of the charts on the internet, and am still searching for more information.

As to the Hoke name.  I married one.  I also have been looking for the man, William Hoke, who came to Montgomery Co., Texas around 1850.  William was born in South Carolina according to the census.  Family stories say he was born in North Carolina.  Everyone believes he was a descendant of one of the 3 Hoke brothers who settled in PA.  The unproven story is that he left home, possibly North Carolina, after his father died and traveled south with a relative.  He owned some of the land that once belonged to a Michael Hoke, and is believed to be a relative but not son of his.  He was an emancipated youth at a young age on his own, so Michael I guess died when he was young.  Have you run across a family with a son missing born about 1810.  Are your Hoke's from Pennsylvania before West Virginia?
