5th-grader suspended for toting toy gun to school
1:43 PM, September 21, 2012
GRAND RAPIDS — A fifth-grade student in western Michigan has been
suspended and faces possible expulsion after bringing a look-alike gun
to school.
MLive.com says police were called to Sherwood Park Global Studies
school Friday morning after students saw the boy on the playground
with the gun with an orange tip on the barrel.
Grand Rapids Schools spokesman John Helmholdt says district officials
have repeatedly told students and parents about the school's "'zero
tolerance" policy regarding weapons and look-alike weapons. He says
"even though this was a toy, it is considered a weapon" in the
school's student policy handbook.
The boy is suspended for 10 days as the district moves forward with
expulsion procedures.
An investigation is ongoing.
