alternative build output name?

Besides building the code as-is and then renaming the output file using system commands, is there a way to configure the build to generate a specific name? ie instead of d8, make output be d8_build_variant_1.

At one point, I saw a reference regarding alternative_name setting. However, I can't find the reference now when I want to actually try it. Any tips?
