A quite abnormal incident of filling a well with mud and soil upto a height of 20 feet took place at Kuriannoor. The Ennickattu family members used to draw potable water from the well, which is about 150 meters away from River Pamba till the last week. What happened during the heavy rain and subsequent flood, a few days back is astonishing. Most probably during high flood, water stream from the river forced an underground flaw of water, which carried sand and mud into the well. During the flood time, the water inside the well was muddy and bubbling up. Now on lowering flood water level, only mud is seen inside the well. Upto 20 feet of the well is filled with mud/sand. Total depth of the well was about 50 feet.
Mr. AT Mathew (Joy Ennickattu, Kuriannoor) and family, who depended this well for house hold need of water from it till last week, says that a trunk of a tree of more than one and a half feet diameter was visible across the well at about 50 feet down. The portion of the trunk of the tree inside the well was cut and taken out years back, for it was a hindrance to draw water. The decay of the remaining trunk, left underground might have caused passage for strong water current carrying mud and soil from the river to the well. Whatever be the cause of filling the well to 20 feet by nature itself, now two families at Kuriannoor has no drinking water source. Government, Local bodies and Water Resources Authorities may investigate reasons for the incident urgently as two families are deprived of their water resource.
The families need to re build the well by removing the large quantity of soil deposited so deep down in it.
